Talk about jumping in the deep end of the pool with both feet!

I almost had the same kind of start to my safari hunting career, only with a lion. On the very first hour of my first safari, in Deka, we were just out for a drive so that I could get my bearings and Roy Vincent could get to know me, when we came around a corner in the two-track and a magnificent lion stood up right ahead of us. Roy swerved the truck toward him and stopped so that I could have a nice look at him. I, (not having a lion on license as I'd chosen to not extend my hunt out to 28 days from 24 days in order to add lion to everything else I already had on license), was so excited that I grabbed my camera and jumped out, movning in between the truck and lion to get a good photo while Roy was yelling at me to get back in the truck. I never stopped to think for even a second about the implications of being on foot, 25 yards from a mature lion, armed with only a camera. Roy thought I was going to take a picture out of the window of the truck, and here I was wanting to get up close and personal. After the lion trotted off, I then realized how stupid I had been. That was the first animal we saw in Deka, other than a few impala and a duiker, and of course I immediately thought it was a fantastic lion area..... And it was the only lion we saw in 24 days of hunting!

DLS,

Cool story. Sometimes you have to feel like someone is looking out for you.

The elephant was not planned but a wounded bull we bumped into on the road just out of camp. It was a communal area so it was the PH's responsibility to take out the bull. It had a huge festering wound on its forehead and was in a foul mood to say the least repeatedly charging the open cruiser causing me untold angst. He finally ran off into the bush and we gave chase. When we caught up to the elephant the PH pulled me into position and told me where to place a bullet. I did as he said and that's how my first day on safari went.

Sorry we got a little off topic but I do love that story. I was so green and that day was so amazing.

Mark

Good gosh, I am amazed you guys can chronologically list all your trophies! I don't know if that means I am getting a bit "slow" as I progress...

Cape buffalo (10)
West African Savanna Buffalo (1)
Elephant Bulls (2)
Elephant cows (2)
Leopard
Hippo (actually a Big 7 critter)
Croc (ditto)

First DG animal was a buffalo like so many on these boards.

On the plains of hesitation lie the bleached bones of ten thousand, who on the dawn of victory lay down their weary heads resting, and there resting, died.

Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch...

And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

First Big Five animal: Leopard (1) 1988.

Lion (1) 2003
Hippo (1) 2003

From 1989-2010, the specific years have faded from memory for the buffalo, and elephant. I do remember the last buffalo was taken in 1998, and the last ele was in 2010.

My first Buffalo, a 40 incher in the Okavango Delta, was not only my first African animal, but was taken on the first day of my first African hunt and it was the first thing that I ever shot that did not have feathers. Needless to say, I was sold.

I think that buffalo is almost a certainty to get and also the least expensive. Elephant is more expensive but not too difficult. The cats are very difficult to get. Rhino is simply VERY expensive. Hippo and crocodile are relatively easy.

That is, if all you want is a good representative specimen.

I have just started, I hope. Hope to do a Buffalo, Sable next year and maybe Buffalo, Leopard the following year. No more elephants for me, but if I can afford it, I will do a buffalo every year.
