Just home from Limpopo, and of 8 plain games shot I recovered just two bullets.
Loading was 250 gr Woodleigh RN / 338 Winmag.
Rifle was a Plain Jane Ruger M77.
Loading cronografed to 2630 fps a cold April day.

Bullet to the left is from nyala shot at approx 160 yards.
Entered last left rib, stuck under the skin in front of right leg. Weight 175 gr

Bullet to the right is from waterbuck facing me at approx 150 yds.
Entered at base of neck, found the bullet by the liver. Weight 236 gr

Other game was zebra, bushbuck, warthog, baboon, duiker and steenbuck.
All pass trough.

Not bad performance for a rather soft RN thumb

I'd be worried at the way the one on the left appears to have failed. Wink Big Grin Big Grin
I would that all my bullet performance was like that. Any pics of the rest of your trip, sounds like the sort of trip I'd like to make.

They did the job, but reconfirms my love for the BarnesXs.

Well done Arild. A report would be great.

I wonder where the BarnesX would offer an improvement over the Woodleigh in these examples ? It all looks good to me.

I have used the Woodleighs for years in my .338 and most other calibers..I have never had a single complaint and they kill in a hurry even on the big stuff like Buffalo and Lion. They have been proving themselves in the field for ions and they bespeak Africa! wave

Try the 300 gr. Woodleigh at about 2400 FPS, its a slammer on the larger game and penetrates to beat hell....I have quite a number of recovered Woodleighs from Buffalo and the larger animals. The Woodleighs expand very ragged and have those long wings of attached lead and sharp copper, and that is why they do so much internal damage, those wings are like a buzz saw as opposed to some perfectly expanded bullets that resemble a muzzle loader ball and are as smooth as a babys butt...These kinds of smooth expanded bullets make pretty pictures and impress folks to no end, but they are not always as effective as one might think! stir thumbdown

Good to read this post. I just finished loading my Woodleigh's for a caribou hunt in NWT next week. I shoot the 250 grain bullets and push them with 70 grains of RL19. Good groups. Most of my recovered bullets look the same.
