Free State farmworker killed by lion

Bloemfontein - A lion has killed a contract worker on a Free State farm, police said on Tuesday.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the attack happened on the farm Leeubank near Villiers around 21:00 on Monday.

Police said the man from KwaZulu-Natal had left a house on the farm to fetch water from an outside tap when the lion pounced.

The worker appeared to have been killed when the animal struck.

Mophiring said the farm owner shot and killed the lion, which had apparently slipped out of its enclosure on the farm.

How the lion managed to escape would form part of the investigation into the matter, Mophiring said.

Bloemfontein - A man killed by a lion on a Free State farm has been identified as Senzo Mkhize, 23, from Underberg in KwaZulu-Natal, police said on Wednesday.

Mkhize was killed by a 3-year-old male lion at the farm Leeubank near Villiers on Monday night.

The lion apparently climbed over the 3m high gate of its enclosure before it attacked Mkhize.

Mkhize had gone to fetch water from an outside tap when the incident happened.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the lion pulled his victim a few metres over the ground and in the process his neck was broken.

Mkhize was one of a group of contractors cutting grass on the farm to make fodder.

Mophiring said the incident was being investigated.
