Has anyone taken these to Africa and used them as shooting sticks? I need to practice with my double 470 before the selous next year and was thinking of purchasing some and taking them with me. kd

I have not used them in Africa, but i have at home. They are very stable, but also very heavy when compared to a bamboo set or the like. In an effort to keep you gear to a minimum, i would leave them at home and use what your PH has for you. My PH used a bipod style, bamboo sticks. They were great in the hilly country. Type of terrain would also be a consideration.

If I may suggest, a little practice before the hunt with the PH or tracker in mounting the sticks is a good idea. Especially if you are a lefty, like me.

When you get a set of sticks, no matter the type, do not rest a double rifle directly on the sticks! What you want to do is rest your forehand on the sticks and hold the rifle in your forehand! The reason for this is a double should never touch anything other than your hands, shoulder, and face while shooting it! Resting the double rifle directly on a sand bag, sticks, or anything else will cause a exacerbated muzzle flip, and a double rifle depends on that controled muzzle flip to regulate properly! One word of caution here NEVER put a double rifle in a LEAD SLED! The S/S double rifle recoils back, up, and away from the other barrel, so there is some sideways movement in the S/S double that may break your stock in the wrist area! .........................Good shooting and enjoy your new double rifle! ......................................... ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

I highly suggest practice, practice, and then more practice. I discovered that I had real problems with sticks over 150 yards. Maybe my prior training came in handy as I can sling a rifle and often shoot better than sticks allow. I was amazed when shooting with sticks the difficulty of holding "dead steady" on 200 yard plus shots at my range stateside. Regarding relying on a PH to supply sticks, you're taking a chance. I found out more than once that what they offered were not very user friendly. Usually too tall for my short height and I believe you can have the reverse problem if you're too tall. The time to prepare is now, not when you step off a plane and falsely assume the PH is completely prepared.

I have to send mine in for repair ($), 1st time I tried to use them, one of the legs wouldn't lock Maybe I just got the lemon but if I had to do it over, I'd go with the ones with red on the legs, Bog-pods Jim fur, feathers, & meat in the freezer "Pass it on to your kids"

Primos Brothers products are cheap crap. I've never seen anything of theirs that was outdoor worthy in the long run.

I did not use trigger sticks, but did use bog pod tripod. Practiced for some months with them and used them in Zim and left them with the PH. His were awful-too short and not stable. ...I say that hunters go into Paradise when they die, and live in this world more joyfully than any other men. -Edward, duke of York ". . . when a man has shot an elephant his life is full." ~John Alfred Jordan "The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. Is the bog pod tripod easily adjustable in height and fairly stable? Will it fit in the rifle case for the airlines, and how does it adjust? thanks kld

I've got a bog pod tripod that I really like. Only had it a year or so, after my Cabelas tripod that I leaned against the wall slid down and shattered the piece that joined the legs together. The bog pod has worked well, is not too heavy, but I doubt I'll take it to Africa. Most likely rely on the Ph's sticks.

kld: Didn't answer your questions on adjustments. The legs are in three sections. You twist them to tighten or loosen. Loosen them and you can extend the leg. They've got marks on them so you can extend the legs to the same length (of course, you may want one longer than the others if that's what suits you). I like them because I can set them up short, when I'm sitting in a stool (which I do a lot of in South Texas), or long, when I'm walking, which I do a lot of as well. Pretty easy and quiet to adjust.

It is easily adjustable for height. I had the gun bearer or PH carry it after it was adjusted so no time was used adjusting. I ship it in my tuffpack with the rifles or in my duffle bag. ...I say that hunters go into Paradise when they die, and live in this world more joyfully than any other men. I have found with my bog-pod that if I leave the inch marked legs set for my height preference then they are easy to carry and are the right height for a kneeling shot and for sitting I can use one leg as a more than staable rest. For a standing shot I only have to set the lower legs to the marked max length so it is quick and easy to adjust for any situation. I use them for all my shooting from rabbiting out to 200yds standing through to my medium and big bores. Have found them to be excellent and as stable as could be needed. Can use them as a walking staff or with the lower legs up slung like a rifle with the leather carrying strap I made. Von Gruff.

Strapman: Dunno who you hunted with but: Shootings sticks fit all sizes - the wider they spread the lower they go. Folded in a bundle will stand at 6' and will fit anyone under 7'. They are rock steady and weigh next to nothing (besides, you don't carry them - the tracker does that) and it is one piece of luggage that you don't have to cart around with you. One other thing, the original poster was talking double rifles and 200yds is a wee bit beyond the accurate capabilities of one.

The Primos Trigger Sticks are a cleaver design but very fragile. The plastic support of the rubber cradle is very weak and will easily break. One of my clients had a new one break on the second day of a cull hunt. He shot only about 70 rds. of 257 Weatherby before it broke. Geoff Shooter

It's been my experience that with a double rifle you are usually better off shooting off-hand. Practice shooting off hand and you will be suprised how good you can get. Anything within 100 yrds. will be in trouble. Don't worry about shooting tight little groups, use 9" paper plates as targets and find out how far away you can be and reliably hit them. This will give you a good idea of how close you need to get with your double. Also take MacD37's advice, he is correct!! Tom SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC

thanks everyone for the advice, I am always amazed at the knowledge that everyone has on these matters, sure saves a lot of $$$$ and time by using everyones experiences,,apparently a bog pod is the way to go, anything else I need to know, fairly new in the double rifle game, been to Africa several times but this will be the first time with the ferlach 470 nitro in the selous....kld

No matter what sticks you choose or off-hand, you need practice. Practice with a .470 is expencive. I use .475 Hornady pistol bullets (325 gr) with about 95gr. of H4831sc. I wouldn't go below 90 gr. They seem to shoot in the same place as the 500 gr. full power loads, at least in the 35 to 85 yard range. I load the 500 gr. bullets over 112 gr. of H4831sc. As I said before, use paper plates as targets and learn to hit them. There are probably other people here with practice tips. If you're like many of us here, you are going to love shooting a double and hunting with one. SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC
