Based on the stuff I had read here I assumed I would be given the option of shipping my rax unmounted trophies home either way, that does not seem to be the case.

I'm being told that because I hunted in Botswana, and it is a land locked country, they have to send the trophies to SA via air. Then because of some paperwork, or packing or something they have to be sent to the US via air and can't be shipped via sea. From what I'm gathering it has something to do with how they are packed or permits or some such thing.

I'm guessing I'm looking at a $2,500 shipping bill instead of $1,250.

Has anybody else been hit with this?

I have tried to ships clients trophies by sea to help reduce costs. It has ended up taking over a year and cost more at the end of the day than the original air freight costs.

My 2 cents worth... leave it to the pro's & pay the air freight unless it is something like an elephant full mount Wink

This is what makes it so confusing!

The PH says that AIR is the only way he knows of trophies being shipped and that it doesn't cost much more.

The exporter in SA says the cost difference is not significant.

Fauna and Flora says it costs 50% more to ship by air.

Something tells me that Fauna and Flora has the most experience on what the shipping actually costs.

last time i shipped by sea it took 30 days to get here and the cost was just 1/3 of air, but it was a rather large shipment; I'm going to try sea again this year, mainly because i plan on shooting a buffalo so big that it won't fit on something as small as a 747

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

i shipped via sea freight from Namibia and had no problems, took 3 weeks to get the trophies. Was 50% less that air freight.

My experience has been that sea shipping has taken about one month and has resulted in being at least 1/3 cheaper than air. Fauna & Flora is the way to go for sure.
