Another vote for the 1.75x6. I find it a perfect combo to do everything from low light with cats to buff at nearly point blank.

I'm going to be different!

Nikon 1.5x4.5 I've used Nikon on all my guns, have been for many years, 100% happy with them

I also put removeable mounts on, I enjoy shooting iron sights more then a scope...

I use a 1.5 to 5x Leupold Vari-X3 on my 416 Rigby. I found that most of my first shots are usually on 3x (good compromise between magnification & field of view) and use 1.5x for any follow up work (maximum field of view). I also like the heavy duplex on my 416 - it is faster/easier to quickly focus on the cross hairs, especially in heavy cover.

I like the 1.5x5 Leupold, 1x4 Leupold and a 3X fixed Leupold (discontinued)...All good scopes..

I see no reason to put a big power scope on a rifle that will never be used beyond 300 yards, and in reality never beyond 200 yards...

I like the straight tube (20MM obj.) as they do not tend to lose POI from a hit or blow of some kind, as the large objective lens seem to do...The are also neater, trimmer and just look bbetter for whatever thats worth.

2.5x leupold compact on my cz rigby but without a doubt the best scope would be the swarvo that a poster mentioned above looked through one of those and it beats ANY leupold hands down.........just way out of my price range though Frowner

The problem is that the 416 Rem is too versatile!

I had a 6x42 on mine when I was doing the load workups...

Then a 1.5-5x for a while, but never really liked it...

After that, a 2.5-8x that was shot an awful lot, but it seems to have gone TU, so back to the factory...

Just ordered a 2.5x.

All Leupolds, of course!

As far as I am concerned, the "I can see forever!" reaction upon looking through a Euro scope is primarily due to the price tag. The Germans don't know anything that the rest of the world doesn't, and most of the price of a Euro scope is a result of socialism.

IMO, of course. Cool

In the past I used nothing but Loopy scopes, but over the last few years I have experienced very poor customer service and warranty service. I started using Docter Optics a few years ago, I find them quite a bit clearer than the VX3 and exceptional at last shooting light in heavy bush. I highly recommend the 1.5-6x42 with 30mm tube. This scope has handled some amazing abuse in the two years I have used it.

D99,

No doubt that the S&B offerings are tops - I've owned several. My problem is that they are great for some applications, but are behind the times when it comes to compact, high res optics.

These days optics are so good that it is more a matter of application / intended use than brand when dealing with the good companies.

A great example is Nightforce who make scopes designed for military / LE applications....Just so happens that they make a couple of offerings that are super compact, 30mm tubes and are way more rugged than hunting scopes. The 2.5 -10 x 25 "NXS" is a great example. Their illumination system is the best in the business. Widely used and rspected in the Special Operations community.

Check them out http://www.nightforceoptics.com

Look at the 1-4 and 2.5-10 models. I think these would make the ultimate DG optics.

I've used their optics for Tactical comps for years and have beat the crap out of these - no problems to report thus far.

Versus the S&B Zenith 2.5-10 x 56, the Nightforce has the same eye relief (3.7"), one less foot FOV @ 100 yards, is 6 ounces lighter, is 3.1 inches shorter, has better illumination, is more rugged and costs 2/3 what the S&B does.

If I were to be specializing in after dark shooting of Lions, Leopards, then the S & B would have the advantage, but for the other 99.9% of hunting I do, the NF is the clear winner.

Jeff,

My only concern with the NFs is that there is such a thing as too compact.

For example, that 1-4 looks too short to mount on a magnum length action. Or, if it could be mounted, I'd be afraid of crushing the objective lens when tightening the front rings, as sometimes happens with Leupold 1.5-5s.

Have you tried it?

mrlexma,

Roger that on the "too compact" aspect. However, I have one of those old little Leupolds (8" OAL) on a Dbl squarebridge action (.460 G&A) and it fits nicely. The NF, 1-4 is 8.8", almost an inch longer so I'd reckon it's going to be great - no, I have not tried the 1-4 yet- I have the 2.5-10 and it goes on everything.

These are really nice optics - I actually sold one of my S&B 3-12 x 50 scopes for the bigger NF 5.5-22 x 56 and in my opinion it is superior to the S&B for what I'm doing!

.44, do a search on "458 Lott scope" or "toughest scope" or something like that. You'll find an older thread with some comments by D'Arcy Echols and others about Lotts and the scopes they eat. Big Grin

Ray's comment about a .416 not really being used beyond 200 yards is one that I fully agree with. Because of that, I can't come up with a good reason for scoping a rifle that large, at all. Neither .416 nor .458 rifles will be used for horizon shooting so just put a good, solid peep sight on it and go hunting.

Leupold 2-6X. It seems to be a nice setup for my eyes. At my age, I don't shoot so well with open sights anymore, so a scope is a necessity.

The simple fact is, for precise shot placement, there is no substitute for a good scope.

Allow me to dissent on not scoping a 416. I consider myself a pretty good shot and I would have felt a lot less comfortable taking that 125 yard shot on my buffalo a couple of weeks ago. the 1.5x5 Leupold afforded me PRECISE shot placement (see the pic of the buff on my post) that I ppep sight would not have given me. A 458 I might agree, but with a 416 I can easily make 250 yard shots on any animal and for that I need a scope. jorge
