Shottists impress at SA Champs

The Zimbabwe Standard
5 November 2006

LOCAL shottists acquitted themselves well at the Africa Area Practical Pistol Championship held at Polokwane, South Africa last weekend.

Zimbabwe was represented in three of the five divisions available — Standard, Open, and Revolver. Don Heath of Cleveland Pistol Club in Harare retained the title of All-Africa revolver champion he won at the 12th World Championships shot in 2002 in Polokwane, winning the division with a score of 100%.

Another Cleveland gunman, Paul Friendship was the only local to win one of the 25 stages outright, and in addition brought back the bronze medal for "B" grade with a score of 80% of the match winner’s score. Warren King of Bulawayo won the silver medal in "B" grade, while fellow Bulawayo shottist Troy Maidwell took away gold in the "C" grade. A total 20 Zimbabwean competitors travelled for the match.

The event, contested by five nations, was a four-day match which is one grade below a world championship shoot. Ira Larivers, chairman of the Zimbabwe Pistol and Smallbore Association, is happy the good showing will encourage foreigners to come for domestic competitions. Zimbabwe Open national championships will be hosted by Donnington Practical Pistol Club at the end of this month.

Close but not quite! Still there is quite a lot of journalistic license in the report since Zimbabwe’s sporting fortunes are nearly as low as our economic ones. Wink At the 2002 world championships there were only two African entrants shooting revolver class. This year there was bit more competition- but I am still no Jerry Miculek. Been there - not in his league!

Last year I won the Olympic centre fire nationals and saw that reported on the forum

Congratulations, Don!

Zimbabwe's sporting fortunes may be as low as it's economy, but your talent has managed to drag it out and shine it up a bit :-)

Well done!

Congratulations Don. Now, tell us what hardware you used. Seeing as this used to be Rhodesia, what model Webley did you use to win this thing. We want pictures of the equipment (the guns, that is)!

Good show Don! I talked with a few So Afica friends a few weeks ago and they were teasing that I would be working in the US while you were target shooting within a few hundred meters of big game.
