Mozambique: Wild Animals Kill 59 People
24 July 2013

Maputo — Wild animals killed 59 people and injured a further 44 in Mozambique between January and May this year. Wild animals also destroyed 186 hectares of crops, with elephants being the main culprit.

According to the government spokesperson, Deputy Justice Minister Alberto Nkutumula, crocodiles continue to be the most deadly animals, killing 47. In addition, snakes killed six people, elephants three, and hippopotami three.

Nkutumula was speaking to journalists on Tuesday after a meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet), which received a report about conflicts between people and wildlife.

According to the report, authorities destroyed 90 problem animals including 52 elephants, 18 hippopotami, 13 buffalos, four snakes and two lions.

In some parts of the Zambezi River, barriers are being constructed because it is beside rivers that the greatest number of attacks by crocodiles and elephants take place. In addition, crocodile eggs are collected along the Zambezi.

Seems they target the wrong species.

Kill Crocs first, Snakes second!

Leave the Elepahants to paying Hunters!

when you look at the 90 animals killed, it represents a huge source of potential revenue had hunters been allowed to take them. 2 lions??? man, that hurts!

Close the Kruger's Eastern boundary, they are shooting our Elephant. After the war there was zilch left in Moz. Now it becomes a problem simply because they have no proper fences on their side of the so called Peace Park.

Renamo has risen out of the bush so the fire of war is rekindled. Once again wild life will be co lateral damage to feed the hungry masses.

I'm perplexed by some of the replies here... The report states that quite a few Moz citizens recently died via wildlife attacks, if the animals that killed those humans were subsequently shot and killed, so be it. IMO, that is life ( and death) in the wild.

yes but the offending animals would be just as dead had hunters been allowed to shoot them- with the added benefit of money flowing in to the government.

Ahh, I see your point. If paying hunters could be put upon the offending animals ASAP, that would be a very good thing indeed

I guess the issue (problem) becomes getting the hunter and his/her $$ onto the animal ASAP ..can't really run an ad internationally and wait for a hunter to respond & arrive while the critter gets more of a taste for human blood

You wouldn't need to plus why do all the work yourself.

1. Get a few PH's together (or companies) and
let them know what is what. They could start
collecting names of people who could respond quickly.

2. Animal comes up, contact PH's, let them get the people.

Remember, every PH is likely to have some hunters already here, they could even offer
it to them.

Who wouldn't jump at the chance of a cheap
cull animal of any sort ?

At least it could be tried, if no one available,
then fine, shoot it.
