Ok lets see which calibers you have used to shoot big game animals and which rifles you have fired but not shot anything with. The one who has used the most calibers on game wins. Note - not open for professional gunslingers, writers, etc.

* Feel free to add your comments next to each cal. to make it more interesting to others:

Ok I will go first since I started this mad challenge:

Game shot to-date with:

12 bore (3 animals)
22 rifle
22 hornet
243 Winchester
240 Apex H&H
270 winchester
7x57 mauser
30-06 (first animal shot with a rifle with this cal)
300 H&H
300 WSM
8mm (Indian - I think it is an 8x50 rimmed army caliber)
9mm Mauser
9.3 x 64 mauser
338 WM
375 H&H Magazine(best caliber of all)
375 H&H Flanged magnum double barrell(used one extensively, learnt to shoot with one)
404 Jeffery
450/400 Jeffery
50 Muzzleloader Knight

Rifles fired at paper tigers (targets):

17 hmr
22 magnum
223
300 WM
300 Weatherby
308 winchester
358 winchester
9.3x62
9.3x74

I'll play along. I've taken animals with the following:

17 HMR
22 LR
22 Hornet
223
22-250
243
25-06
264 win mag (my primary 'light' rifle these days)
270
7MM Weatherby (1st big game animal, a spike elk at 15 years old. Got two trophies with one shot, the 1st elk and 'weatherby eye')
308
30-06
300 Win Mag (lost it in a horse 'train wreck' in the Alaska Range in 1989)
338 Win Mag (caliber I do the majority of my hunting with these days)
375 H&H
416 Hoffman (love this caliber!)
458 winchester (sold this rifle, a Colt Sauer, after it jammed with an enraged bull elephant at 10 yards!)
470 NE (never should have sold this rifle, it was a wonderful old Rigby)
50 Blackpowder muzzleloader
54 Blackpowder muzzleloader
12 gauge
20 gauge
28 gauge
410 gauge (yeah, I know it's not a gauge, but it is a shotgun choice)

I haven't shot many guns with which I've never taken animals.

[i] Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

My list - big game
[LIST]223 Rem

7x64
280 Rem
30 Rem - I started with this one and still use it occasionally.
30-06
300 Win
300 H&H - What my Grandpa moved me to when I outgrew the 30 Rem. It has accounted for almost as many memories as my 264.

I'm not much of a paper puncher so will only add the 22 LR, 22 Mag, and 17 HMR to this list.

Thanks guys for playing along. Wonder why all the other readers are not playing! Boring Frowner. It will be interesting to see the results when everyone finishes. I think some of the posters should edit their lists. When I said big game I didnt mean fox, coyote and such, but small antelope will do. Oh well I guess it does not matter.....

In sheer numbers, I've taken the most stuff with the 308 as I've used it for culling in Australia and Hawaii. But as far as hunting circumstances are concerned I've taken the most trophies with the 270 and the 375H&H.

Forgot, shot a deer with a .44 Mag (Ruger carbine)

P.S.S. Did not include several dozen deer 'killed' with a .357 Magnum, 9mm, and 12 gauge buckshot. But these all had been busted up by the fenders/bumpers of cars first. Trust me, the 357 Magnum is light years ahead of 9mm's when it comes to dispatching broken deer. 12 gauge buckshot is marginal when chasing deer with busted hindquarters through fields and shooting them at 50 yards. Been there, done that, several times.

Maybe I'm cheating because I've gotten to shoot most of these because clients brought them and offered to let me shoot them. With well over 2,000 clients in the last 21 years, I'm sure I'm forgetting a whole bunch.

I guess I won't win.

I guess I should also count ducks, quail and pheasant with a 12 gauge. Are we supposed to count pigeons with a .17 air rifle?

This is a good post. Here is my humble list, no african game yet, but deer, elk, pigs etc:

Rifles
22LR
223
243
270
280
7MM RM
30-30
303
7.62x54R
308
30-06
300 Wthby
444
50 cal ML

Shotgun:
12 ga

Pistols:
41 Mag
44 Mag

Probably missing a few that I have taken a deer with. Can't even begin to count all the different calibers I have shot.

30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.
