I see in the new September issue of SPORTS AFIELD that Zambia is opening quotas in three areas for elephant sport hunting, after 20 years of protection. The Chiawa, and Rufunsa, are near the the Zambezi National Park, and the Lupande is near the South Luangwa National park. I have never hunted the first two, but the Lupande has, or did have the last time I was there a lot of Elephant, along with a lot of Buffalo, and good populations lion, and Leopard, hippo and Croc. One might find a real tusker in the Valley! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

Yeah, but you gotta watch that Sports Afield... some of their writters aren’t terribly reliable... especially when it comes to elephant stories. Seriously, that’s great news. There should be some tremendous bulls in areas without serious poaching issues. Great hunting, Kyler

I'll second Mac on Lupande. There are many elephants there and the breeding herds can be down right hair raising to deal with. We did see 2 that would perhaps go 40 lb. in '98 and the ivory is longer and slimmer than in Zim. The PH claimed he saw 2 the previous year in the high 60's. Regards, Mark MARK H. I heard from the booking agent that represents Peter Chipman, and he said a client shot the first ele of the season in the Lower Lupande around the beginning of the month (August), and that the bull went 71 pounds. Now I did not verify this....I'll post a pict if/when i get one. I saw some very nice bulls last year in the LL, and took quite a few pict's which I had posted on AR. But the thing was, having not been hunted, they just stood there. I just could not see myself hunting them. The Lower Lupande is indeed an excellent area. Peter is 4 for 4 on lion this year so far, with one more hunter to go. In the three years that he's had the concession, he's 14 lion for 14 hunters, not bad.

Maybe I ought to come up with a classification system for African hunters. Class I: plainsgame only. Class II: The occasional buffalo: Class III: the Big Five. Class IV: The Big Five in one safari, every year! This budget bwana can only sit on the sidelines of elephant stories and applaud . . . wistfully! The elephant we saw in Zambia in 2000 were very spooky indeed. They acted like the had been severely poached.
