I don't think that the spotting of cats as an evolutionary strategy for camouflage is news to anyone. But when I hunted Mountain Zebras in wide-open habitat that was virtually brushless, I was hugely surpised at how difficult a herd of a dozen or so is to spot in that environment. That black-and-white pattern blends unexpectedly well with rocks and grass, making them easy to overlook, especially for the untrained eye. My two hunting companions, both of which are experienced hunters and have excellent eyesight, agreed on the unexpected difficulty of spotting zebras. | |||
