I know Namibia has an 8% VAT tax. That is supposed to be figured on the value of the trophy. How do they determine the value of the trophy? thanks.

I would think the value is whatever you paid to shoot it.

How do you get away with not charging VAT on trophies in Namibia? I thought it was a law. I was asking about the VAT tax on mounted trophies if that makes a difference.

TJ, you do not pay any VAT on anything that is exported, like your mounted trophies, or your trophies that you hunt. Your outfitter would however have charged you a rate of 15% VAT on you dayfees ("luxury" items are taxed at a rate of 15%), as well as trophies wounded and lost, in other words that cannot be exported. This last part is law, but a very grey area, and open to abuse. Russ, yopu might not charge it, but I bet the outfitter you use has it build into their prices, as he HAS to be registered for VAT with the government to operate as a legal safari company/ guest farm/ hunting farm. VAT is 15% and most outfitters work it into their price so that it is included. Some do not. Either way, it is the responsibility of the outfitter to pay the tax to the gov.
