I would say that was enough lost big ivory genetics to have great effect on the genetics of ivory size today.

Genetics don’t disappea,r, age is the factor to have quality trophies " Until the day breaks and the nights shadows flee away " Big ivory for my pillow and 2.5% of Neanderthal DNA flowing thru my veins. When I'm ready to go, pack a bag of gunpowder up my ass and strike a fire to my pecker, until I squeal like a boar. Age and nutrition are the key factors, the genetics are there. Even the rocks don't last forever.

Many factors influence the size of ivory, nutrition and age being near the top, but genetics is still the main factor. And yes, characters (phenotypes) can disappear from a gene pool if individuals which exhibit them are not able to pass the genetic content (genotypes) on to successive generations. Gene pools are not constant, but rather are always in flux.

Jesus, so many. Unregulated hunting and poaching have done in so many species. It's a miracle the elephants have survived this long. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Somewhat typical of the drivel printed by our Daily Wail. No mention that what they call poaching was a licensed trade with monies raised from said licences going to governments who even then regulated trade and employed decent men to do that regulating. Tying images of a bygone era to bylines of modern day poaching and corruption is disingenuous and intended to mislead a gullible urban populace. The UK media is nothing more than a sensationalist vendor of tomorrow's fish and chip wrappers. Take everything it prints with a pinch of salt and a healthy dose of scepticism. No mention of how many folk then or now are fed by meat from legally shot elephants when an ele' story ever hits our media. No mention of the large sums of money recouped by governments and number of local people employed solely because of hunting either.
