Folks do you know what the import procedure for black faced impala in the US is if any? I am told that there is a way to do it. Does it involve John Jacksons group? Thanks for the help once again.

Mike,

The last information I had, back in 2007, it was not legal to import the BFI into the US.

Mike,

You can apply for the permit from USF&WS. Working with Conservation Force helps as they will guide you through forms and will make sure you dot all the "i's" and cross the "t's". CF requires a $500 donation and I believe this is needed so that they can show USF&WS that a financial effort is being made in Namibia for the conservation of this species. Mr. Jackson sits on one of the NAPHA boards that oversees the management of the Black-faced Impala and he also acts on the hunters' behalf here when it comes time to dealing with USF&WS on trying to import the trophy. Unfortunately, he has not had much success regarding the Black-faced Impala. In the past few years, I don't believe Conservation Force has managaed to convince the USF&WS to allow any BF Impala trophies to enter the country. Not sure on the reasoning behind this, I mean, it isn't even listed on any CITES Appendix; although our ESA does list it so that may be why there has not been any permits issued. I really wanted to hunt one this past fall when I was in Namibia but passed because I knew it would be highly unlikely that I would receive the trophy.

If you click on the map it shows separate areas for the Common Impala from the Black Faced Impala.

Looks like the main problem is the introduction of Common Impala to Namibia and interbreeding.

Mike,

Peter Sohrada has one of the Namibia ranches that has black-face impala (the only variety he has and there in no cross-breeding). On several visits to his ranch I have personally seen what are certainly 'top 10' trophies on his place. And yes, Mr. Jackson will have to come into play to get them imported.

Thanks folks I figured it was Johns group but wasnt sure.

Matt, Hey, Thanks I know Peter has access to some great animals. This wasnt for me however. Kobus asked me if I knew what the procedure was. I figurred it was the conservation force but had not heard of anyone being successful in importing one. I just wanted to make sure there wasnt something I didnt know about and pass it along to him.

Just to update, John confirmed today that USFWS has not and will not allow importation. No permits period regardless of the Conservation Force programs.
