I'm looking for a tritium front sight for the Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan. Does anyone know of someone who manufacturers such sights? If they don't, they certainly should. Seems like it would be the cat's meow (no pun intended) for leopard hunting in low-light if you don't like scopes.

trijicon makes tritium front sights for handguns , one of these could quite easily be fitted on any rifle .. pm or email me if you need to know who to call

As a cop carrying tritium sights for many years, I think fiber optic sights would be brighter in low light that tritium. Tritium sights aren't that bright unless it's dark, and they have a shelf life.

agree with dr lou - i put fiber optic sights on my 470 and they really worked out well

FWIW, I have tritium sights on my handgun and they're good for that but I wouldn't have them on a rifle.

Just remember: For hunting, by the time tritium becomes useful for sighting, it is usually too dark to clearly see the target itself. With fiber optics, as long as the sight is lit up, so is the target (usually).



As Ivan mentioned, while Trijicon and XS do not have a Hawkeye application listed in their catalogs yet, a smith could measure the dovetails and work something up from an existing offering. Although, the front sight on the Rugers is a bit unique with a lengthwise dovetail.

In daylight, the Trijicon ampules with a white outline appear as a large white dot on my 870 front sight and green/yellow/green at night, and simply black with the Surefire lighting up the target, but it's a not a hunting gun.

I have them on my Wilson 1911. I like them for shooting an intruder in a dark room, but if I'm hunting leopard from a blind at last light I think open sights are a recipe for disaster (your PH getting clawed).

I have XS on a .416 and .375 with a ghost rings and we are pleased. Have used both in Africa.The folks at XS are very helpful as to application and welcome call.

The fiber optic is a little bright for me in Africa and prefer a white post/bead out front.

I had a Meprolight front sight put on a 12ga shotgun several years ago. I wasn't overwhelmed with how it worked when new and it has gotten dimmer with age. I'm in the process of playing with a Burris Fastfire II on my Lott, but as a backup I've got a large white bead front sight.
