Bro Steve and family spent thirteen days back in Ethiopia after ca. forty years' absence. Toured the north and revisited the south (Hoseina environs) and -- never heard a hyena!!! I used to get up in the middle of the night to listen for hyena calls, montane nightjars and Ethiopian snipe mating flight sounds. The country is full of people, mostly still tilled using oxen. Waiting on pix...

Perhaps your bro was unlucky. They still come into the outskirts of Addis to pick up dead livestock and any garbage at night.

Looking forward to those pics! Haven't been there...yet. Love the Etiopians I 've met; and the cuisine, raw kitfo in particular. I wish their govt. would rethink that 21-day hunt minimum!
