Have a 458 Lott. Zeroed at 50 yards. Planning to hunt Buff in a few weeks. Is late the right yardage to zero ? Or should it be 100 yards ? Have hunted Buff before and I doubt I would even take a 100 yard shot.

The questions are:
1. If you zero at 50, how low are you at 100?
2. If you zero at 100, how high are you at 50?

I like #2, personally.

With every rifle I've ever shot, zeroed at 50 also meant zeroed or just a bit high at 100.

So . . . zeroed at 50 is perfect. Leave it alone.

Thanks, I've already done that. 1/2" low at 100 yards. Probably just thinking to much about it. Got to get it perfect you know.

You should be fine. Less than a 1/2" difference in 0-100 yards I would suspect.

Fifty yards .
At 150 yds. you are still almost in point blank range.

From Norma web site. For 500 gr.458 Lott

Still in the kThe 458 Lott was introduced by Jack Lott in 1971. After having been injured by a buffalo in Mozambique, Lott wanted more than a 458 Winchester Magnum. To improve the 458 WM the case was made 3/10 inch longer for more case capacity. 458 WM cartridges can be used in place of 458 Lott standard, and 458 Lott is the favorite cartridge used in the rifl es of many African Professional Hunters

Every heavy rifle I have ever zeroed has been zeroed at 50 yards.

That will do the trick for you at any DG range, up to and including the closest and the farthest likely.

Steve,

When You get to your hunting camp and check your zero after the long plain ride the PH will have some recommendations concerning POI. Just do whatever he recommends.

Ditto. Each trip I have re-zeroed per the PH's wishes. No problems.

If you are an avid shooter/hunter...and have shot a lot of animals over your life...I say zero to what you are used too. Sometimes buff hunting calls for quick shots that for an old hand are instinctive. You kill a buff the same way you kill anything else...IE: the bullet needs to hit something the buff can't live with out!

Listen to your PH on WHERE to hit the buff then shoot like you always do! Wink

Question:

Open sight or scope?: If you have open sights...leave it 50. Scope I would zero at 100.

The question you need to find the answer to is: Where is the bullet hitting at 25 yds or less. One or two inches high or low at 100 yds means nothing on a Cape Buffalo's kill zone, but .458 Win Mag with a 500 gr bullet zeroed 2.5" high at 100 yds will be 1.25" high at 50 yds, and 1/2' high at 25 yds. The .458 Lott will shoot a tiny bit flatter than the .458 Win mag so If it was my rifle I would zero 2" high at 100 yds, for a 1" high at 50 yds, and dead on at 25 yds, or less! Where pin point accuracy is needed is from 25 yds back to the muzzle of your rifle!

However, any change you make allow enough time and target practice to make any change come natural to your off hand shooting, and check the POI at 100,50 and 25 yds. The "sudden kill zone" gets smaller and more critical as the buffalo gets closer. When things get very close a CNS hit is just about all there is to stop him.

The .458 LOTT is a very good Cape Buffalo, and elephant chambering IMO.

My .458 WM will hit dead on at 25 and 100 with 450 bullets going ~2250. It is about 1-2 " high at 50.
