He's beautiful Saeed, what are the genetics behind these guys? Is the black color a dominant or recessive gene? ~Ann

Ann, I have no idea. May be some of our learned members can shed some light on this.

Only a guess on my part but I'd say the same as a black sheep or an albino anything.....It just happens and is a recessive trait. In some parts of the US farmers are culturing a red holstein.....also a recessive trait but one can breed for it....or rather for the probability. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Hunted a concession in the Limpopo, where the landowner had a bunch of them (black Impala) in a non-hunting area, along with some nice Nyala and Sable... These game ranchers know what they are doing!

Actually, with sheep the natural color is the black or blue color. Sheep were bred to produce the white wool, which was easier to color for clothing, etc. When I was high school showing livestock it was always neat to get a blue/black sheep because you stood out in the show ring with a bunch of white ones. Before, there was no seperation between the colored sheep and the white ones. Now, some of the state livestock shows have a seperate class for the blue or black sheep that is refered to as the "Natural Class" because of the natural color. I am no expert, but I know a little about this trait. It's called melanism, is genetic, and occurs, although rarely, among many species of animals. The black panther or leopard is perhaps the most famous example. I have seen black squirrels (which are normally a rufous gray) in my back yard. I have not seen a black impala before this one. Saeed, was he bred specifically for this trait? Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

I have posted a lot on this before, last year some time. We have one of the biggest breeders of these animals only 5 km's from where I live. They are now widely spread throughout South Africa, due to intensive breeding, but the originals comes form a ranch near Mokopane in Limpopo (not far from Kwalata). Cost to hunt one of these will be about $7000.00, if you are lucky to find one for that purpose. Congrats Saeed, they are truly wonderful creatures.... www.infinito-safaris.com Charl van Rooyen Owner Infinito Travel Group www.infinito-safaris.com charl@infinito-safaris.com Cell: +27 78 444 7661 Tel: +27 13 262 4077 Fax:+27 13 262 3845 Hereford Street 28A Groblersdal 0470 Limpopo R.S.A. Thank you it was Mokopane, I hunted at this farm in 2006 I shot a fine warthog and saw some very nice Nyalas and Waterbucks and those Black Impalas they were held in a spesial fenced area. On the same trip me and my friend Reinhard Heuser came over a Leopard on broad daylight, I never forget the meeting. It was on the top of the hill between M`solo Solo and the bushweld area.
