JCN,

Thanks for the detailed post. I can appreciate what you are saying and basically agree with you. I am not so much looking for the perfect or "world's greatest scope" rather the best possible tool for the job. I don't particularly care who makes it just that is works and works well for the job I need it to do. Having never yet found any item or product which I think is perfect....I certainy I don't think I am going to find a scope that will be in that catagory either.

As for having "the hots" for US Optics or Nightforce....nope! Women I have the hots for! scopes I just want to hunt with Seriously, as I posted earlier NOTHING in written is stone. I do want to learn more about these two brands as they look interesting....hence the second question regarding them.

What is important to me is to weight my choices as finely as I can starting with the broadest possible set of options and then whittle on down to the items(scopes) that seem most likely to fit the bill. Not only is this usually an education, in this case about optics, but it is also part of the fun of putting one of these rifles together.

You mentioned weight and I have heard that addressed many times in regard to scopes for big bores. The heaviest of the scopes I am considering are just under one pound...14-15ozs. I am not sure if this is considerd to heavy for a .416 or not?

I hope I never have to take you up on your scope rental offer! I imagine I will have it covered as I bring a spare
scope for each rifle I take on a hunt.

Regards,
Dave

I have two 1.5 X 5 Leupolds and a fixed 6X Leupold with a 42 objective which are in quick detachable mounts for my CZ 550 Magnum in 416 Rigby. My newest 1.5 X 5 has the German N1 Reticle as supplied by Premier Reticle and the other has the Leupold heavy duplex. I may have Premier reticle change the heavy duplex to their N 2 reticle as there is a little less clutter in the scope. They all have great eye relief and I've managed to avoid getting hit, even on the bench, with these scopes. For dawn or dusk hunting of plains game or at a leopard blind the 6 X is a great all-around scope and I can shoot through it with both eyes open without problem.

I have a 2.5x compact leupold on my .416....but I can see the virtues of the 1-4 or 1.5-5x or 2-7 on the .416 as it shoots suprisingly flat.
