Factory (custom?) 404 Jeffery loads

My gunsmith wants me to supply him with a couple of boxes of 404 Jeffery loads before he reams my new barrel (I don't really know why). I know where I can get reloading components, but who still loads for this caliber? Does Kynoch?

Old Western Scrounger is a Kynoch importer, but they do not mention what calibers are available on their web site.

Also, what bullets are available in .423 for reloading? I have found Woodleigh soft points and Barns solids. I've ordered a hundred rounds of Norma brass. Finding the dies (in stock) is proving a little more difficult, though.

Later, I'll need recipes. I'm looking to get as close to 2400 fps with a 400 grain bullet as possible and remain within safe pressure limits.

Thanks.

GAHUNTER,

Try Superior Ammunition

or Westley Richards

I have purchased Kynoch .500 Jeffrey ammo from OWS before, they should have the .404 as well.
Another is Cheery Creek Gun Range in Colorado. They stock most Kynoch offerings. Their website is: http://www.eastafricasafari.com/nfrm_kynord.html
I have purchased from them as well.
Another option is Westley Richards in Springfield, Mo. http://www.westleyrichards.com/
You need to check with them as to what they have in stock. They were out of the .500 J due to some paperwork with the German Govt.

try Huntington's for dies http://www.huntingtons.com/CustomDies.html

Dies are readily available from RCBS, Huntingtons.

Bullets are Woodleigh, GS Customs, Kodiak, Northfork(soon), Barnes and RWS to name a few.

Brass from HDS, Norma, Mast Tech.,RWS...

Powder: IMR4831 is the one and only logical choice...RL-15 is a distant 2nd.

Primers: Fed 215 only

Ray,

How about H 4831 instead of IMR 4831? (I like the fact that Hodgdon Powder is relatively stable at all temperatures)

.404 Jeffrey is out of stock at Westley Richards. They have an order pending with their supplier, but can't say when it will come through. I spoke with Roger. Nice guy.

GAHunter,
I never could get the same velocities with H4831 in the big case..I believe IMR 4831 to be as stable as any powder and very safe in that it's hard to overload any 4831 in most calibers...

I have used it for years in Africa and Southwest Texas where temps hit the 125 deg. and even more on ocassions..No problems.

Its real beauty is it gets such high velocity with such mild loads. the 404 will get 2450 at 6 grs. under max.

Well, I found two boxes of old RWS 404 Jeffery at a local gun shop in Buckhead. They want about $120 per box (of 20) for it. Considering that RWS does not import this caliber anymore, sounds like a pretty good deal. I'm going to buy both of them for the boxes and the brass alone.

GAHunter- if your buying the RWS loads for collector value then fine but if you want to shoot it then reload, it's much cheaper and you can tailor your loads. Norma brass is fairly cheap at little over a dollar a piece. A lifetime supply of reloading components can all be had for less than what you would pay for the two boxes.
