I am looking to buy a lockable hard case for my ammunition to place inside my checked bagage. Can someone give me the dimensions for a box of Federal .375 ammo. Currently my old boxes are packed away in storage so i am unable to measure them myself. Thanks Giraffe Hunter

Federal boxes are quite large, but I use a "Cash Box" that I buy from Wal Mart for $7.97 that works just fine. Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

My last trip I used two pistol cases for the ammo. I woul like to be able to place it all in one box next time. I leave the extra ammo with the PH when I leave, so I am planning to put carvings in the box on the way back so they don't get broken. Giraffe Hunter

This year I'll be using one of the hard plastic ammo boxes Cabela's sells. In the past I've used a metal box I bought at an office supply store, but I think this plastic one, with its rounded curves, will be better inside of a rolling duffle bag. With this one, you can easily get 5-6 boxes of ammo in it.

GH: The dimensions for a bos of Federal .375 H&H are 8.25" x 3.75" x 1.5". I use a Pelican 1200 case and it will hold four Federal .375 or .458 boxes or 5 Remington .375 boxes. The Federal boxes are much bulkier due to the 5 round ammo carriers they use. RCG

I use the Pelican 1300. It holds 8-boxes of the MTM 20-round plastic boxes w/375 length cartridges.

That's a good looking, $22, lockable solution Spring, here's the web site: Ammo Travel Case Item: IF-215353

I have the box the Spring is buying, it's ok, kind of big. So I bought an inexpensive hard, single pistol case which held (2) slip top 20 ammo boxes perfectly (.404jeffery). Fit very nicely in my duffle last fall. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I scatter the factory boxes around in my suitcase, that way I can pack more stuff in it... I have noticed that plasic 20 round ammo boxes will bust out in the bottom in transit on the airlines, is there nothing they cannot destroy?.. Can anyone identify the airlines that require ammo to be in a separate hard/lockable case? I can't find any mention of it on Delta or SAA other than the rifle case mention. Les

No you cannot, it is not required. All that is required is that the ammo be in factory type boxes with seperations..therefore factory paper boxes are fine, plastic boxes with seperators are fine... I beg to differ but the rules regarding ammo contaier requirements are different from airline to airline. From recent research, I know for instance that both BA and Virgin Atlantic require the ammo to be pack in its "original packaging within a hard sided case". I recall reading here other American airlines have similar requirements too. The problem is that few employees of these airlines seem to know their own company's rules so there lots of scope for confusion. For instance does the requirement that the ammo be in a "hard sided case" mean someting like a metal cash box or would packing it in a hard sided suitcase also meet the requirements? Anyone planning to take several boxes of ammo should also be aware of the weight issue. Most airlines have a maximum weight limit of 5kg per person but they also have a maximum weight per total amount of ammo per plane. In theory, if several hunters were on one flight this could be easily be exceeded, but in practice I have never heard of this being enforced. if you are traveling to RSA you should also be aware you can only bring in ammo in the same calibre as your rifles entered on your SAP 520. If your hunting with your own .375H&H for instance, you can no longer bringer over a couple of boxes of say .416 Rem for the PH. Regards, Pete

Each country has it's own version of the Air Navigation Order but they're all basically the same set of rules which are also backed up by IATA - These rules specify that each round must be kept seperate from the other rounds. So either the manufacturers packaging or those plastic ammo containers are acceptable. 5 Kgs of ammo per passenger is the maximum weight allowable. THEN each airline has it's own set of rules on top. Many are now asking that the ammo be placed in a hard lockable case. Sometimes this is for security reasons and sometimes it's simply for ease of handling. SAA out of JIA for example have the passenger take their firearm and ammo to a seperate firearms handling office. If the ammo is just in the passengers main checked baggage then it all has to go to the firearms ofice, which makes it difficult to store and handle. So that's why they like you to put the ammo into a seperate smaller container. The problem with doing this of course is that by putting ammo into a small container (esp a metal container) you're actually creating a greater risk to the aircraft than if it were just in the checked baggage.......but common sense never was a strong point with airlines......

Thanks! So BA and Virgin Atlantic appear to require a hard [lockable?] case. Do ANY of the domestic US airlines require a hard case? Any idea about Lufthansa? KLM appears not to require such is that correct? Les

Not only do different airlines have different rules, different agencies in the US Government aren't even on the same page. In Atlanta, a customs officer told me that my ammunition had to be in a separate and lockable case. TSA regulations specify that ammunition and rifles can be in the same locked case. When I showed her the TSA regulations and Delta Airlines regulations, she relented and allowed me to keep my ammuntion. She told me she though it would be nice if the government agencies were all on the same page regarding regs. I am not taking a chance next time. I will have a lockable case along, just in case I have to move my ammunition to it in some other jurisdiction. THE LUCKIEST HUNTER ALIVE!
