Hi all, I have not seen a post on here from ALF for a long time? Is he still a member? I enjoyed his input on mausers, Brno's etc. Cheers

If you do a search for ALF on AR, it appears that while his username is still active, all his original posts are gone. All you see is a period or a slash mark where his posts were. What's up with that? LTC, USA, RET Benefactor Life Member, NRA Member, SCI & DSC Proud son of Texas A&M, Class of 1969 "A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?" He posted in Gunsmithing on August 5th 2010 Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

He went back and erased a bunch of his posts. He did answer a question of mine a few months ago. I believe he locked horns with one of the moderators. I don't think he was banned though... He is/was a great wealth of info here in AR. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

If he is the poster with the tag name ALF, then he was humiliated on the Big Bore forum. I think a couple of posters on there went way to far pushing the "He has his head up his A%& etc. etc. I do think that whether you agree with him or not he had a better understanding of bullet wound behavior than anyone else on AR. Shame to lose him. He is owed a couple of apologies. 465H&H

I do not know ALF, but if he is such a mine of information, why when he "locks horns" with one of the moderators, does he erase all his posts, thereby denying us peons the benefit of his knowledge and wisdom? I had an amicable PM relationship with him. Didn't agree with everything he said, but, unlike some, he always had personal experience to back his data and posts. I miss seeing him here, he never had a case of the "Dumbs". Rich DRSS

465; I believe you are correct. He was sort of beat up on the Big Bore forum. Too bad, there are plenty of other forums on AR to enter. EZ

He is a smart cookie and I always paid special attention to his posts. HAd the shit to back up what he was saying, unlike most internet experts.

I saw that. Not sure humiliated is the right word. But he was grossly and repeatedly insulted by more than one poster, that's for sure. Why people must resort to such vile personal attacks is beyond me. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

about erasing posts, I wonder if Walter does that? When 500 grains got banned all of his stuff disappeared as well. I do not think they give you any notice in advance. You just are... gone. Rich DRSS

The thing to do is cut and paste the threads you care about into a file on your own computer. That is if you are concerned your day may also come about.....So sad that all that valuable info posted by .500 and Alf is gone forever.

I always found Alf to be a gentleman and very generous with his knowledge, both on the forums and in PM's. It is a loss to us all if he isnt posting anymore.

I suspect at some point you can still edit old posts but not delete them -- thus the / or . Maybe there was more personal information in some of them than he wanted public? ------------------------------- Some Pictures from Namibia Some Pictures from Zimbabwe An Elephant Story

I might add the JPK faded about the same time as ALF. I believe the same scenario played out with him on the Big Bore forum. JPK had a lot of wisdom via experience himself. EZ
