Right after the DSC convention I was very pleased to have the opportunity to attend and particpate in a 'taster' course at the SAAM training facility at FTW Ranch in Texas - hosted by the principal, Tim Fallon and his able staff. The idea was to demonstrate to outfitters what this facility offers - in terms of giving clients better training pre-hunt. The event was attended by nine hunting industry representatives and we had a great time and agreed that we all learned something.

We split into two groups after a 'classroom' intro, one group sampled the SAAM Safari course while the second group tried their hand at the Precision course. On the Safari ranges we shot stationary and moving targets, using both the full-power safari rifles they have at FTW, as well as the Ruger 223 rifles that they use to practice (with a full-sized rifle) repeatedly, without the heavy recoil of the big guns. Out on the Precision ranges we were instructed and shot 30 calibre rifles out to 1000YD. The two Australian shooters distinguished themselves by hitting the 1000YD gong first shot each and then retired graciously. Big Grin

On the second and final evening we were treated to a steak dinner and many rounds of beers at the bar. Once again the Australians fought-off a very strong New Zealand contingent, to be the last ones to bed - the Kiwis put up a good show but just werent up to the high standard on the night. (the drive to Houston the next day was very testing however!!)

In conclusion I can say that from what we (at least I) experienced at FTW, that participating in such a course (both the Safari and Precision - depending on where and what you hunt) would be thoroughly beneficial to ANY hunter. I defy anyone to say they could attend such a course and not walk away with 'something'... for the beginner or intermediate or anyone who has something to gain from proper firearms training - it would be a very, very worthwhile - I cannot recommend it highly enough!!!

Everything about SAAM & FTW is quality - the staff, materials, facilities, equipment, accommodations and food. All top-notch with wonderful hospitality.

You can see the information about SAAM courses right here at their website - or contact Tim Fallon directly.

Incidently - I am planning to put together my own (full 4 days) SAAM Training course at FTW for some clients, right after DSC next year. We will limit the places to eight spots and we will be focussing on the Safari course but there will be an opportunity for anyone keen to spend 1/2 to 1 day on the precision course for a break. Cost will be roughly $3700 pp including transfers to San Antonio. Ammo is extra.... Let me know your thoughts/questions - if anyone is keen to join our group... it would be a good opportunity for 2013 DSC attendees I think.

i must say that if i have people who have attended the course they shoot and handle their guns significantly better than the average guy - these guys not only know how to shoot but they know how to TEACH and thats a whole different thing-

I attended the SAAM (Dangerous Game / Double Rifle) school in 2011 prior to a hunt with Ivan Carter in Botswana. As a former US Marine, I can tell you the training is spot on and clearly recommended. We launched plenty of rounds down range with big bores (whatever you bring) and of course the Ruger "Safari" in .223 caliber. The facilities are first class and the staff always ready and willing to assist. The instructors are "best in class" and not only are they superb instructors... They can and do shoot "lights out" from point blank to 1,000 yards. My hat's off to the entire operation. In fact, my daughter and I will be attending the "DG" course in 2012 as a primer for another hunt abroad. Major kudos to Rim Fallon and team.
