My dad shot 2 tigers in the early 1950s - with Eley 2.5 inch paper cased ammo using Ball & LG (6 lead pellets). My dad did not get a rifle (10.75X68) for another 5 years.
Thousands of tigers & leopards were shot in India until the late 1960s / early 70s using such ammo. My gut feel is that 95% of ALL big game (including sambar & the odd Gaur) shot in India was with such ammo from 12 bore shotguns.
In the last 10 or so years, vastly improved buckshot has been developed. The newer buckshot is plated and will penetrate much better than the old lead buckshot.
I have deer hunted extensively using the old lead pellets. They tend to flatten and not penetrate well.
