Nine flat tires in ten days. Can anyone top that?

I just got back from the Khoadi Hoas tribal conservancy in NW Namibia. It is remote, rugged area and hell on tires. I had a fine hunt with Gerrit Utz of African Safari Trails and his staff is as good as any of the Pit Crews at Nascar when it comes to changing tires. Nine flat tires in ten days is a personal high for me with my previous being just a puny three flats in fourteen days. I was just wondering if anyone else out there can break this total of flat tires?

Pay up and get BF Goodrich - Mokore uses these and have one flat a year.

I had none on my trip and did some serious off roading.

That area is hell on tires. We go through a lot as well. Shale and shift cut sidewalls like paper. Most of us have learned and you buy the cheapest tires with decent sidewall and tread belts. At the end of the day, expensive or cheap, you're going to lose a lot of tires there.

Otherwise, hope you had a productive hunt. Trophy quality animals have certainly returned to the region.

Are the run-flat tires available there yet.
They were designed for Spec Ops us on the military version of the Polaris ATV and UTV.
They are now available on Polaris vehicles in the USA.

We put green goo in our tires to help plug the little leaks, but when you slash the side wall it just looks like you ran over a slime monster. We use split rim/tube tires on our patrol Cruisers, but in the interest of time, you still pull off the offending tire and patch around the campfire at night.

Run flats are available, but are oppressively expensive and for passenger vehicles only. They wouldn't last long in the bush.

We have had the best luck with smaller/lighter vehicles like the Suzuki Gypsy and Mahindra Thar. The Thar is by far the best vehicle for the area as it's turbo diesel and 4 wheel, front independent drive is unstoppable. Plus you can purchase 4 for what a new Cruiser costs... Eeker

Labat and I once changed 18 over the course of a 21 day hunt. After I settled my bill he got new tires. Wink

I got even when we took his cruiser and a set of brand new tires to Malapati a few years later. We knocked the cherry of those brand new BFG's over 12 days and 2000k's.

Ahhh, I needed to hear this. As a farmer I get more than my fair share of flats. This takes the trophy.

I KNEW it reminded me of something!

Can you imagine how many Jeep could sell if they offered a little turbo diesel?

A had Suzuki Samurai which is what they were called when they imported them into the US. Rude and crude but a tough little vehicle that I took full advantage of. It was my first new vehicle purchase back then.

Shale can really tear up tires fast. I've shredded a few tires turning too sharp tearing up the side walls. But nine flats in ten days must be close to a record!

They aren't cheap but worth the expense in the long run: Wrangler MT/R with Kevlar by Goodyear retail at around $220 - $250 each.

Funny story about tires:

After several flats, PH was screaming "God Dam Mother F....kers!" Told his crew to radio Maun and get some new ones sent out. Their order via radio to office was something like this, "We need 4 mother f....kers!

Office girls got a great laugh, but didn't know what they needed!

Darin,

That was funny. in '94 we hunted in the Zambezi Valley and we had flats every day and sometimes multiples. I looked at the tires and they didn't look that worn. Seems they were made in Mozambique and were just of crappy quality. It was a little irritating to change a tire and an hour late to have another flat. It didn't happen but I envisioned a long walk at some point.

Mark;

We had the same experience hunting out of Mahimba camp in 2005. After we loaded my buffalo and headed towards camp we had 3 flats. We didn't have anymore spares!!!!

Although we had several more I think Guncore's is a record!

Best regards, D. Nelson

Lot depends on the ground, burning brush leaves stumps that hate tires, cutting brush does the same, and rocks are murder on tough tires. Some safari companies use tires to death and they get pretty thin...One thing I found out ranching some SW Texas mountain ranch with horrible rock roads is cheap tires seem to work best in sharp rocky country as they give to the rocks.
