Serengeti series on Discovery

Watched the first two segments of "Serengeti" on Discovery. Produced by BBC I think. Good photography, but by the end of the second episode I could tell they were trying to "humanize" the animals (they named damn near every animal except the bugs). Watched the third episode and it almost went over my head, but a "hero" male lion who "rescued" a lioness who was "kicked out of the pride for mating with a male outside of the pride" was shown "helping" her "rejoin" the pride. Guess what they named him? CECIL. The BBC and Discovery Channel can KMA.

It is in Paul Tudor Jones Grumeti area.

If you can get past the animal names and storylines there is some outstanding photography set in a classic East African area loaded with game.

So this is filmed in a hunting area? That’s hard for me to believe.

Well yes and no. Jones converted it to photo when he took it over back in 2003. It is a Legal hunting area yes.

I only watched a brief part of the third or fourth installment and then turned it off. thumbdown Every animal is humanized to the point that you think you are watching some sort of fictionalized reincarnation. rotflmo

Agree totally!!

I watched the first 3 episodes and said the same thing to my wife - they narrate like the animals are people.

The Baboon lamenting over the loss of his girl and what to do about raising her baby was too much for me to watch...

Pathetic.....

Turn the sound off...put on some Bob Wills...lay back and enjoy the scenery and animal interaction.

Agreed with all said above about the narration. thumbdown

Doc, that’s a good idea. Well, Bob Wills is always a good idea.

I set it to record, but have yet to watch it.

The wife recorded it and I have been amazed by the wonderful photography. Narration sucked, and even she thought it was too DISNEY. We just put on some low music and enjoyed them.

I’ve watched each issue with great interest, but only because my son and I will be in Maswa North three months from now. It’s been good to see what the general habitat is like. Between this and following Mike Fell on Facebook & Instagram, my son is about ready to bounce off the ceiling. He’ll celebrate his 32nd birthday the day we fly from Dubai to Arusha and this will be his first buffalo hunt.

Back to the Discovery Channel series, I can’t stand the stupid narration, but the cinematography is outstanding. The variety and numbers of wildlife are stunning. The Serengeti and areas surrounding it are a special place.

Haven’t seen this series. I know on others they cut and paste completely different animals to form characters for the story line. Need to hold feet to the fire on “documentaries” vs. fictionalized drama

My wife, who is not a hunter, stopped watching it for the aforementioned reasons. She is interested in the wildlife, scenery, etc but she said all the naming of animals and ascribing human characteristics to them was B/S.

There's another series out there called 'Savage Kingdom". Yep, they all have names, are called families, brothers, sisters, completely humanizing them with human emotions as well. Good photography though!

I recorded, then watched, a few minutes of the first episode, then fast forwarded to the last few minutes, then deleted the episode. Disgraceful use of great photography to push an agenda.
