What a great day it was ?

I was invited by Peter Viljoen or as you know him PeterV on AR to join and capture some of the moments of the AGM. About halfway trough the shoot we had quite a thunderstorm and rain and it was decided to call the shoot. But I could not see anyone complaining as they all had a great time up to then.

The guys at the Big Bore are great to hang out with with some very interesting people that also joined yesterday.

Richard Harland and it was a pleasure to finally meet you sir again.
Fred Everet and a couple of other big names which I cannot remember or is am just plain scared to mispell. Big Grin

Anyway the shoot was great and is a super to check if you can handle your gear or the gear is up to scracth before taking on the real stuff. For more info on the Big Bore check out Big Bore Association

Here is some pics and comments for you to enjoy.

Group 1 lining up for the elephant range.

Dr. Mauritz Coetzee look how serious he is on taking the correct time on the shoot. Big Grin Caught him in a bad moment.

Getting ready for the Croc range.

The croc range points were scored for heart shots only and damn those lizard hearts are almost in their guts ! Some people found out the hard way with scoring 0.

Eduard Katze on the leopard range it was also his last day as BASA President and stepping down from it.

Look out! Leopard 10 feet to your left shoot quickly !

Hennie, pulling his face as he knows that a real elephant must have felt that shot. Ouch !

The auction sale that went realy well.

Peter Viljoen, on the right checking the list of auctioned items. BTW he is the new BASA President congratulations.

And now for the real serious matters of the day the Braai and Social. thumb

I have shared the camp fire with the man. He just celebrated the birth of his second son! He's a good man...

OK, since you guys are always in for action I decided to put up a little video of what really is happening at the Big Bore Association and what the shoot looks like.

This is a shorter version of the promotional BASA movie that I'm making for them.
Just over 6 minutes with enough gunshots trust me. clap

Big Bore Shoot Video

Sorry for the guys with a slow connection but if I made it shorter it wouldnt have been this nice and if I made with lower quality it just wouldn't be the same. Get up, pour yourself a nice drink or something while you wait for it to download.

Thanks for a video well made! A pity about the rain but I believe all the guys enjoyed it! Especially my slip in the mud! Stepping down after seven years as President and hading over to a great fiend, Peter Viljoen that can take BASA to new heights. Serving BASA was a wonderful experience and I made a lot of good friends worldwide!

Paul
Thanks for the kind words! Still waiting to share a campfire in Africa!

Happy Hunting

That is an absolutely perfect range, one of the safest I've seen anyplace, and a great film strip!

The circuit you guys run is a very well thought out exercise, to test your skill, on the run, as it often is in the bush. I particualrly liked the sequince where KATTE slid in for a landing, at the running croc target.
jumping jumping jumping

Katte set up some fairly well thought out shoots at the 4K DRSS hunt/shoot last winter, and summer, for being done on the spur of the moment, and fun was had by all, there as well!

We (the DRSS)need to get over there for some friendly shooting one of these days!

GOOD SHOW MATES!

Thanks for the video. I really enjoyed that. I thought it was interesting how most of the shooters did NOT work their bolts from the shoulder for followup shots.

Gotta agree that it looks like a lot of fun. I did notice one thing that bugs me; boltgun shooters are taking the rifle off the shoulder to cycle the bolt after the shot. I would've thunk that you'd see folks cycling the bolt from the shoulder like it should be done.

As you can see a lot of work goes into preparing a range of this sort. I was also hoping to try out the range that day after the filming but the rain ended my hopes.

Anyway there is another upcoming shoot in January and I'm going to attend that one again for sure and that time shooting both rifle and camera. Big Grin

Seems a number of the Africans don't think it should be done that way. I recall discussing this with Katte (the PH who is the outgoing BASA president), but don't remember the reason. I noticed that he doesn't reload from the shoulder either.

The guy with the double a minute and a half into the video gave a good example of how not to reload a non-ejector double though. Too slow.

I was good fun, wet and slippery as hell! I am putting together a management hunt at my place for DRSS members, as I need to take of excess animals. After the hunt we all could attend a Big Bore Shoot. All details will be ready at DRSS Brady Shoot. I will liase with the new EXCO to see what dates is finalized for 2008, I believe it will be the June shoot!

Mark
I am just more comfortable reloading that way; I just come more natural for me! I promise you, I am just as quick as any other guy reloading in the shoulder. I always suggest to shooter, do what comes naturally to you.
Golden Rule - Never sacrifice speed for accuracy!!!!!

Ps. Try to arrange warmer weather for this poor bloke from Africa in Brady, or enough Scots……………

See you guys in Brady
