I hunted this Impala Ram in September of 2007 with Limpopo Valley Hunting Safaris right up on the border with Botswana in RSA. I spent almost ten days looking at Impala with Pieter, my PH, onforming me "too short", "not wide enough", "tips point in", "doesn't rake back enough" they all looked good to me! When we finially found this one, I knew what he meant all that time. We saw this one several times and were unable to get a shot at him. The third time we saw him he made the mistake to standing broadside in the clear. He took one round from my .308 Norma Mag and collapsed on the spot.

Here`s my best southern impala, shot in Eastern Cape march 2006..

My PH Russell Lovemore of Safari International and I were driving along a dusty road, when a herd of impalas with a very nice ram crossed.. I had no intention of hunting impala, as I had shot a couple on a previous hunt.. After the herd had vanished into the bush we looked at each other and simultainously said: "let`s go!".. Smiler
After 10 minutes without locating the herd, one impala suddenly appears out behind some bush, and guess what.. It`s the male! What luck! He measures 25 1/2, which must be considered very decent of the southern variety..

Here's one of my impala from 2005, just over 26", shot for meat in limpopo province, RSA. First shot went to the right low in the neck, followed up and dispatched with another shot under the ear. Used CZ550 .308win with 180gr Trophy bonded bearclaws. Excuse the blood in the picture, wasn't planning on sharing it on the web...
Arild, how are you doing? How's Sture and Kjell? PM me sometime.
Aspen Hill Adventures, was the impala shot in the riverbed? because it's illegal to hunt inside the Limpopo river bed from both sides shame, just curious...
Regards, Eugene

Colin,

You must be daydreaming about a near future hunt. But the picture tells me that you actually did it? Maybe it was September 2006?

Great impala, you will be glad that you have listened to the PH.

In good hunting.

Yes, that was September 2006, I just returned from my 2007 trip and will post photos and the story tonight. Shot list for this year is Bushbusk, Duiker, Steenbok, and Klipspringer all on foot. My feet are sore!

I got this ram in the East Cape in 2005. I believe it was my favorite animal of the trip.

Thank you for sharing your photos. Those Impala are gorgeous.

How long are the ears on one? How would you judge horn length?

Thank you.

Its the World's Record East african impala shot in South Masai Reserve, Kenya way back in 1937. The hunter in the old photograph is client Count G. Ahlefeldt Bille, and I think the PH was the great Dyd Downey. Longest horn: 36 1/8. Base Circumference: 5 3/8" and spread of 33 3/8. Nothing compares to Masailand Impala, and if your goal is to shoot a monster impala, your best bet (by far) is to hunt Tanzania's Masailand!

Zimbabwe '04 on George Brown's ranch, part of the Bubiana Conservancy. Kinda puny, made a very difficult downhill shot off the side of a kopje. I have lost touch with George and Lynette, I hope they have not lost their ranch. If anyone has some news about them, please PM me. Thanks.
