I though you might like to see what happens to a 300 gn woodleigh fired at 2300 fps. Frontal chest shot on an impala ram at 75 yds, I think the horns were 23", Shakari was there with the tape measure. Anyway the impala dropped where he stood with no exit wound. On dressing out no meat damage. Weight retention 95%.
There is alot to be said for downloading on plainsgame in thick bush.

It is amazing that todays bullet makers can make a bullet that reacts exactly the same on a duiker as it does on a Buffalo...

The years I just used a 404 or 416 Rem. proved this to me, as with Woodleighs and with Northforks, most all bullets penitrated the body, expanded, did trama, and stopped on the off side skin, both on Eland, Buffalo and Impala and other smaller plainsgame...that goes against all the rules of bullet performance doesn't it? Sometimes the exit, but they still do the trama and leave a nice exit on both small and large game..truly amazing..

Then we have GS Customs and they always leave two holes and do a lot of internal damage on any size animal...

Hey, these guys are GOOD!! thumb beer

Ray: I'll defer to your expertise but that sure looks like a lot of "upset" for such low velocity and low density game. Thoughts? jorge

jorge,
I realize that, but those Woodleighs work 99% of the time on buffalo, Eland, Lion and anything else...I say 99% to give myself a little backing up room because someone will invaribly come up with an exception to the rule, be it Woodleigh, Northfork, Nosler, or Whatever..but anything made by man is destructable and destructable by man, and then there are the yo-yos that shoot a Sierra and tell folks its a Woodleigh or Nosler, cuz they havn't got a clue, been happening since time began, I can picture a Crow Magnon man trying to kill a Mastadon with a sandstone spear, and blaming it on Flint! jump

Bottom line is I would bet dollars to donut holes that those same bullets would perform and stop on the off side of a Buffalo, they have done that for me many times and so has the Northfork soft...Noslers, Barnes X, and GS Customs will usually pass through. there is a place for both types...

If you look closely at the bullet you will notice that it has a "wide" mushroom.
If it had met more resistance, as in the denser muscles of a buff, the expansion would not be as wide, ie the petals being pushed closer to the shank of the bullet, thus allowing it to penetrate deeper in the tougher animal. One of the traits I have noticed of bonded core bullets.
Which makes them suitable for large game and small.

I shot a few Impala head on and stern on for leopard bait in Zim with my 9,3x74R with 286 grain Nosler Partitions and 286 grains Woodleigh Softs, at ariund 2330 fps. all were complete pass throughs.

It was a 375 H+H, the reduced velocity is great for close up plains game as it was zero at 100yds but you have to allow for the 7" drop at 200 yds.

It was a round nose.

I concure as there was virtually do weight loss it was just ploughing its way through soft-stuff.
I enclose two bullets (0.308) on the left a 150 gn sako superhammer head that lost 33% weight on a racking shot on a fallow buck. The right hand bullet is a 180gn silvertip that killed a tree with 5% weight loss but see how tight the petals are.
I have total confidense in the Woodleigh I would just pump the cartridge up to 2500 fps.

There is a theory that animals or medium that are not very dense actually help a bullet expand........................notice that if you shoot a bullet into some hard wood it is almost always together and does not lose any weight.
