Hey Folks,

I am looking into a hunt in the Selous (in three-four years). I hope to take my son with me on a 21 day hunt for cats, ele, hippo and croc. Here is the rub: at that point he will be 15-16 and still in high school and his summer break starts in mid May and runs till Mid August. I have heard that Selous can be tough with tall grss and lots of foliage in July. What are the flys like at that time? Temps? Any insights if this would be worthwhile? Or would I be smarter to take my business to Crazy Bob down ZIm way in the Zambezi in June? I am just afraid in the current state of events there is no telling what condition Zim will be in that far down the road. Hugh

I personally don't see the downside of early July hunts in the Selous, the weather is nice and cool enough to sleep at night....shots are close...I like hunting high grass and even if you burn the buffalo go into the high grass that didn't burn..Yes, you may have to hunt harder but again I don't see that as a minus, its certainly "real" hunting...

Also, you could hunt 21 days ending about Aug 10 or whatever and it would be nice...

Too much is made of July by folks that don't want to hunt, perfering to drive around and shoot from near the truck, or fear hunting in high grass, or just plain have no clue and are just passing on what someone told them...

Everyone gets their game in July and I assure you that the game does not disapear in puff of smoke in July, its still there in the same numbers...

As to the high grass that some seem to fear, its no thicker than some of the stuff I have hunted in Zimbabwe, Zambia or RSA and it has no thorns, stickers leaving me suspended in air! clap The high grass areas are cool, have no flies (they stay in the hills and barren areas), The grass is not 10 ft. high everywhere, just in spots and has large open areas in it...The high grass is where the "big boys" live, it's where they get big...

So, much that has been printed on some of these boards is over reaction by those that either have no clue, or a ultra strong since of preservation and should be hunting rabbits in Nebraska... beer

Thats my opinnion...

As usual Ray has it right - but I'd add to his reply by saying I'd rather hunt Selous at the beginning of the season than hunt the Valley at the peak of the season......

Obviously you have to remember that in any True Wilderness Area the game will go where the water is and rain can fail anywhere.

I guess you'll get a few replies from people who have hunted on or other area once or twice and feel qualified to become an instant expert - but you have to filter them out for yourself. Wink
