"Canned Leopard" RSA???
Are there canned leopard hunts in RSA?
I was under the impression that there are strict controls on leopard there. I also couldn't imagine what a 'canned' hunt would be like. A 40'x40' pen, I would think it would be about as easy to keep a leopard behind a high fence on a large farm as it would be to keep a mouse in an old barn.

ShangaanI wouldn't have thought so either, or that anyone would want to do a hunt on leopard that way, but the two posts on Johan Strydom are worth an read.

GunsCoreThe Vet on my recent darted Rhino hunt admitted to me that there are "quasi-canned" leopard hunts in RSA. As a Vet he is sometimes called out to trap problem leopards which he then keeps alive in cages. A South African PH who has a leopard hunting client will call him and arrange for this leopard to be released near the hunter's bait and blind. Typically, it might be a rush order near the end of a so far unsuccessful hunt. Even with this artificial help it doesn't necessarily work as the leopard doesn't always stick around and eat the bait. He didn't tell me how much he charges.

L. David KeithReputable PH's won't go with canned hunting. It's hard enough for some PH's just to get a Leopard permit in RSA. I can't imagine a captured Leopard that is released doing anything but getting the hell out of the entire area, especially if it's not his home turf. Big cat's know what it means to infringe upon another dominant cat's territory. But anything can and will happen if the money is right. If I wanted a quality Leopard hunt in RSA, stay with the guys that have a ethical reputation. You may not get your Leopard, but they will do everything within their power to help get you one. Several of us here on AR can get you in touch with good cat men. LDK

Andrew McLarenLDK is quite correct: A mature male leopard released in a strange place will get away from there in a flash, despite the most delicious ripe bait! What corecpa's vet did not say is that he had to inject the leopard with a strong calming/relaxing drug. That way the leopard gets very relaxed, and will even sit and watch hunters get near enough for them to see, and shoot, him! Free range leopard, no fences in sight for miles and miles, yet it's a canned animal! Sickening, but true far to often to dismiss as an isolated incident.
To thouse of you who want to hunt leopard: Take LDK's advice and stick to PH's with a reputation for ethical conduct. I do not do leopard unts, so ask LDK or elsewhere to get in touch with good cat PH's.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this does happen and not just SA, all I can say is book with a reputable PH and be especially wary when you get a PH that guarantees Leopard, there is no such thing.
