I am planning on a buff hunt next summer ('07), how does it genneraly work, as far as costs go, if we run into say a hippo or a lion, while hunting. Does the client just pay a trophy fee? Can some one give some clarification. thanks

What country are you hunting and how long is your hunt? In some countries there are restrictions as to the animals you can shoot on a short 7-10 day buffalo hunt. I doubt very seriously if any outfitter is going to let you shoot a lion if you have only booked a buffalo hunt. Most outfitters require a minimum number of days for a lion hunt (generally at least 18-21 days). The Daily Rate for a lion hunt is more than for a buffalo hunt. The quota for lion is usually booked several years in advance. So, not much chance that you are going to be allowed to shoot a lion during your buffalo hunt. If it worked that way, then everyone would book cheap plains game hunts and then shoot every buffalo, elephant and lion they came across and just pay the extra Trophy Fees. You need to contact your outfitter and see what other animals he will allow you to take during your buffalo hunt. If you have some specific animals in mind, then you need to tell your outfitter and have them listed on the contract (with the specific Trophy Fees) so that there will be quota reserved for you. Some countries also require the hunter to have acquired licences/permits for each animal sought, individually issued prior to the start of the hunt.....so your outfitter might need to know what other animals you want well in advance. As Terry says, you need to specify which African country you'll be hunting.....
