BIG Zebra
My dad killed a big Mountain Zebra last May with Vaughan Fulton. He had the hide sent from the tannery straight to Andrea's Custom Rugs. Andrea e-mailed my dad today to let him know that his zebra is the largest to ever come through her shop. She measured the hide at 11' from the tip of nose to tip of tail! She said the rug is going to be amazing.

Can't wait to see how mine measures up but I'm sure it won't top that!

That's a big Hartmann's. I went to Namibia but shot a Burchell's.

Another excuse to post a picture of my big old zebra.

I just measured my Hartsman's that I took in June of 2008 and he measured 10' 6" from nose to tail. To tell the truth I didn't think they would be this big.

Never thought about it so I just measured my Mt Zebra taken with Vaughan !!' 6" tail to nose. I know when I shot him Vaughan said "That is a hugh Stallion" I guess he was right, eh. Smiler

Burchell's from SA. Wall is 10'2" at the base. Hide without the backing measures 11'4" nose to tip of tail. There are 7" of tail hanging down in the corner where the walls intersect.

Only on the ones that are black with white stripes. The ones that are white with black stripes are usually about 15% smaller. Wink

You know what pal, when the zebra is shot by your father on his first and possibly last trip to Africa, 11' is freaking ENORMOUS.

The Internet never fails to bring out the worst in people. The point of my post was simply that I would never have guessed that any zebra skin would measure out that big.

DC, I ment no disrespect as I said I never gave it any thought. I am extreamly happy for you and your Dad. I hope he has many more safaris and you'll couldn't have had a better PH than Vaughan. thumb clap

Die Ou Jagter, my comments weren't directed at you. My dad is very excited about his zebra and I'm happy for him. I don't view hunting as a contest and I think it's awesome that you got a great zebra as well!

I would never have guessed that a zebra skin would be so large. I never saw my dad's zebra on our trip, and I never saw my zebra's hide before it was salted.

Are you kiddin me? All of those zebra are frikken huge. Much bigger than the ones Mrs Blacktailer and I have taken. Another good reason to never have a measuring tape on safari- it's OK to exagerate and you don't have to lie Wink

Congrats to you and your Dad DC. Those are great trophies. Be sure to post us some pics when you get your rugs back, and be sure to tell us about Andrea's service.
Good hunting,
David

DC,

Believe that's a stallion given the wide black stripes on the rump, quite apart from the large size! What a nice trophy.

Would like to hear about the hunt for it.

DC,
I totally apologize for the comment I made. It was intended "tongue in cheek" (mainly towards the numerous claims of gigantic leopards being taken)and there was no intention to be disrespectful nor take away from your fathers trophies and memories. Sorry!

No problem. I'm suffering from the flu and suffering from cabin fever. It's easy to take things the wrong way on a forum.

My Hartmann Mountain Zebra has been draped over the
Bannister for 10 years. I never even considered measuring it until I read your post. 11' tip to tip. Congrats to your Dad.

Of course, I, like everyone else who has a Hartmann's skin, rushed to the living room floor with my tape measure. I won't reveal the actual figures; let's just say that if zebra hides sizes were in some way to be equated with the size of one's personal love-making instrument, I would be quite happy with mine.

My impression is that the Hartmann's averages larger than the "Burchell" or plains variety. Is this accurate?

On the subject of how long the tanned hide is, I'm not sure how accurate a comparison that is. I think that the methods used in processing can either shrink or stretch the hids to some degree.

This is not to take anything away from DC's dad's trophy -- it's a great one (and no doubt capable of satisfying the most demanding woman!)

I have a Hartmann's that is a little over 11 feet. A Burchell that is over 10 and one that is under 10.

Congrats to DC's dad on a nice trophy the Hartmann's Zebra makes a great rug.

You guys have some nice trophies... but I'm afraid my Mountain zebra has these all beat. Mine is about 30 feet from nose to tail...

Okay, okay, it's because the front half of the hide is in the freezer waiting to go to the taxidermist and the back half of the hide is over a chair in my living room but it IS 30 feet. Wink

They are all great trophies folks. Every animal is a trophy to the one who hunted it. It is not just a measure of size. It is a measure of the harship that was endured. The length of the shot also plays a part as well as the stalk Size is just the icing on the caake at the end. Attitude about what is being hunted as well. The animal is picked out and hunted. At last a well placed shot rings out and down goes said animal. It is the whole process that makes it a trophy. As such we should allways applaud those who have taken their trophy animal in a fair chase manner. If it scores well it is a bonus but just a part of what makes a particular event a trophy. My congraulations to this young man and his father. Happy hunting in your future endeveavours.
