I plan to only hunt plains game. Zebra is at the top of my list and a good bushbuck would be nice. I may go for some of the smaller animals like a Springbok. I am planning to use my Montana Arms in 376 Steyr as my primary weapon. It has a 30mm 1.25x 4 leupold. What do I take for a back-up rifle? Last time I used my Savage in 308Win with a 1.5x6 S@B scope to take everything including a Zebra and a huge Kudu. I was using 165gr HE TB and 168gr Barnes xlc's. I have a very light 7x57 single shot with 2.5x8 Leupold {Easy to carry} A 25-06 with a 3x12 scope{ could be a little light for a back-up}; a 270wsm with a4.5x14 Leupold {too much scope for the bushveld} and finally a Winchester for the custom shop in 300wsm. It's new and I only have 24 more day to go but it is nearly idential to the 376 Steyr. Trigger pull, safety, stock design and lop. I don't really have time to work up any hand loads for any of them. This is a short notice hunt that I wom part of by default. The 376 Steyr shoots both factory loads to the same point of aim. Would you stick with one load? Which would you choose for your back-up rifle?

Either the 308 or the 300 WSM. All your other observations are correct. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. ![]() What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

All of the above mentioned rifles except for the 25-06 are upto the task. If I were to choose from the above mentioned battery I'd pick the 376 Steyr for primary and .308 as a secondary weapon. The price of knowledge is great but the price of ignorance is even greater.

Army Aviator, I agree that the 25-06 is too light for plains game. In my opinion the 7x57 would be an excellent choice. I have used the 7x57 for everything from black bears on down and have never had a single problem. I am sure there are many people who disagree with me, but I have still had great success with the time proven 7x57. W.D.M. Bell took many an elephant with the 7x57. Granted he was an expert shot, but shouldn't we all be at least competent shots? I see no reason why the 7x57 would not work for you on plains game. The smart thing to do is take the .300 Win with some 180 or 200 gr. Noslers stuffed in it...A Zebra is no. 1 in your book and they can be hard to kill, and the .300 will work better than the other if you get a angling shot..It will take anything you come up against from about any angle. Take the .300 WSM. I have taken everything from Eland to Steenbok with it, including two Zebra that fell dead in their tracks, each with one shot using 180 grain fail safes. It'll do the the trick for you as long as you aim and shoot smart.

AV At this point I would be moving quickly to make a choice and get your gun permits, 4457's etc. straightened out. Mark MARK H.
