This question is in response to concerns on another forum. Has anyone had TSA damage thier tuffpak in transit to open it for inspection? I have not heard of a single instance. Have any of you?

Although cartridge selection is important there is nothing that will substitute for proper first shot placement. Good hunting, "D"

I heard of only one case, and in that instance airport security cut around the lock. Theoretically the cut could have been plastic welded, but I am not sure how strong the repair would be. Or holes could have been drilled and the case could have been locked with a chain and padlock

It's hard to imagine one of these things being damaged except by intentional action with specific tools. Of course nothing will prevail in such environment.....the Tuff Pak is as good as it gets!

I have never heard of any instance where the case was damaged by security attempting to gain access to the contents. As far as handling damage, they do get scarred up a little but the wheels and handles are well protected. I have heard of two rifles that were damaged inside a TuffPak, but this was do to improper packing and not a failure of the case to protect rifles.

The only time TSA personnel should be going inside your gun case is in your prescence when you unlock it for them to inspect. After their inspection is finished and you lock it it's over!

I don't know tuffpacks, but TSA just broke my travel case and check everything without calling me. Thanks God nothing was missing but imagine that the suitcase lock is broken (as it was) in tranist at the Miami airport, and then anyone can open it in Buenos Aires airport (also in transit).

I didn't like it very much but I think that is for our (the passengers) safety, better to loose a camera than someting else...

Drilling a couple of holes and adding a chain and a padlock as 500 grains suggested is a good idea.

My hunting buddy had his Tuffpak really smashed in transit by SAA handlers last year. The front sight was knocked off a Ruger 77 and the top of the pak was crunched. He pryed it out enough to use it and I think the company replaced the top-at least they offered to. This rifle was in a soft case and padded by dirty clothes. It took quite a whack.

Doc - Was it a Tuffpak or the SKB version of the Tuffpak?

Zero Drift good question!!

I have ZERO confidence in the SKB version- It lasted all but 1 flight before it came apart in the middle and the latch got ripped off. What a piece of junk!

After that bad experience I bought the TuffPak!!!

CL,

Where did you get yours?

I am concerned about getting large items shipped from the states. I got nailed for a $50 USD brokerage fee (by UPS) for a fricken book once. Regular post is usually OK, but I am getting short on time in this case.

Cheers,
Canuck

Hello Canuck!

I bought my TuffPak from 'Harry' at the Tuffpak Booth in Reno, Nevada- During the Safari Club International Convention.

It was the cheapest way to get it- about $350USD No tax, No shipping charge, Included the Tuff Cordura Nylon Duffel Bag Insert and the extra airport carry handle.

I brought it back as my second check-in luggage bag and filled it with tons of catalogues and brochures from various Safari companies and other odd and ends that I picked p at the show Smiler

If you're interested in attending the SCI convention, it is well worth it and you'll end up covering part of the show costs with 'show special' purchases.

If you absolutely need it NOW, then check directly with Tuffpak- I think that they had a flat rate shipping charge of $50USD plus any duties (Should be duty free as it is made in U.S.A.) and provincial & GST taxes. There should be NO brokerage fees for that item, but check with TuffPak to make sure- that is why I hate to deal with UPS and FedEx- I always try to clear items through customs myself whenever possible- it is so much cheaper.

Nalpak is local, and th eowners are members of my SCI Chapter. I talked to them about TSA and locks.

They know of one case where the TSA took the hunters key, and lost it!

That must be whu I always travel with two TufPak keys -- in different places.

Erin go braghless.

Thanks TJ.

I can get a Pelican 1750 quite easily out of Calgary for 2/3 the cost of a TufPak. As much as I might prefer a TufPak, the PITA of shipping/brokerage combined with the price tag, is probably going to keep me from going that route. Still checking out options though.

Cheers,
Chris

You are going to buy something you don't really want...won't really like and then you will still be out the money.
Kinda like a guy buying less expensive binoculars thinking he can get by with them...by the time he is through he could have already had a pair of Zeiss or Leica or Swarovski.
Get it done right the first time. "X" years down the road you will never remember the cost anyway.
I am ready to ship!

You can borrow money but you can not borrow time. Go hunting with your family.
