I selected a few photos last night, and I am in the process of working on them to get them smaller for the web.

I am hoping to post them later in the day.

But, we - that is me and my daughter Hessa - might have gone over board with our selection. So I just hope some of you might not get too bored looking at so many elephant photos.

Damn, now that is a collection of ivory! And still on the hoof, even better!

Great job, Saeed.

Beautiful long tusks on the biggest bull.

Very thin, though.

Any guesses as to circumference and weight? (Sorry, I can't help it - I have to do this with every decent elephant I see!)

I would say, maybe about 15-16" at the lip and 65 pounds.

I am pretty sure the close ele is a cow, thin ivory but long.
Mike I am leaning to 75 lbs since mine big bull had sixty five. Those are longer, and definately 16in up to 17in. circumference.
Would like to see the one behind the front ele.

Great pictures Saeed. Maybe it is my lack of any great experience elephant hunting. Maybe it is because I just have never seen that many old or big bulls in the wild at one given time. I know this is a protected area but I have a question. It seems to me like there is a higher than normal amount of broken ivory. Something lacking in the diet, the sheer number of old bulls together, or my lack of experience?

Mike,

There is nothing unusual as such with these bulls.

Anytime you see a number of them, you will see some with broken tusks and some might even be with one tusk.

I have seen this many time in Zimbabwe.

An interesting if not an unusual feature which seems to have escaped attention is the notch on the left tusk of the nearest elephant and similar notches on both tusks of the farthest.
I cannot see these as being a natural occurrence - the elephants were possibly darted and purposely marked for identification purposes and could also be a reason for the tusks to break off as they are regularly used for stripping bark which could cause the tusk to splinter.

Thanks Saeed. I know there is usually some with broken ivory or a one tusker. It just seemed like a higher proportion than normal. Then again how often do we see this many elephants of this caliber together at one time on a hunt. I might see 2 or 3 bulls max at one time of this caliber. I am certainly no expert on the subject and have actually only hunted elephant once although crossed paths several times.
