I was emailed the picture below by Dr. Fritz Reinhard, who said he spotted this bull 4-days ago in his concession in West Caprivi. Zoom in to appreciate the size.

Caprivi Elephant

He'll be attempting to hunt this elephant next week with an American hunter. I'll update if I hear anything.

Bill

Note: Fritz says he has one elephant tag remaining for this year (early Oct hunt). Just passing on...

Boy, I'm going to show my ignorace, but that has never stopped me before. [Big Grin] It looks to me that neither side would be over 50 lbs. There are much better judges on this board than I. I'm sure they'll pipe in and set me straight. [Smile]

Come on ... this is way too easy.

Anyway, I would venture a guess that you are not too far off. I would guess 58 lbs/side.

I would shoot that Elephant any day.

It is pretty much impossible to judge ivory, much less from a photo. It depends on how big that elephant is which is difficult to tell. Could be 80 lbs., or more for that matter. Guess away but it doesn't mean much.

So, you liked that set-up. I'm surprised that you went so easy. You must have gotten tripped up over the mass of ideas that came rushing to mind. [Smile]

Like I'd have a clue, but based on the photos I've seen, I'm guessing about 98 pounds TOTAL, with one being 52 and the other 46.

My PH had a picture of his father, who was kicked out of (or ran from) Tanzania about 35 years ago when the revolution or whatever you call it hit, with a set of tusks that he hunted for the money (didn't even really like to hunt, license for elephant costs 5 pounds back then, he hunted for the money) which, based on his age now, and the way he looked in the photo, was shot in the late 50s-early 60s, one side went 120, the other, the using side was much smaller, but the wt. was not specified.

Longbob,

Sometimes when it is too easy, it isn't any fun.

Ever notice how when a girl really wants you, she is not all that attractive anymore ... well, you wouldn't, but everyone else knows what I am talking about. [Wink]

Not very clear but this may make it a bit easier to judge.

PS I'm guessing 80 lbs plus. Aren't the Caprivi animals large in body size?
