"Recently Julius Kipng'etich, the head of the Kenya Wildlife service, made a plea at the Library of Congress in Washington DC in an unprecedented appeal for the world to save Kenya's and Africa's elephants from the plague of poaching that has in recent years seen the decimation of tens of thousands of elephants." Kenya, one country not allowing controlled sport hunting yet Zimbabwe with its managed sport hunting has a possible "double the carrying capacity" of Elephant. If the Elephant disappear it will have nothing to do with controlled hunting but lack of it and the management that comes with it. The soaring human population in their habitat does not help ether.

this is the kind of blanket staement and misinformation that makes protecting species diversity from destruction by elephants almost impossible without the uninformed feeling like elephants are down to their last few ...another reaosn we need to constantly be on "our front foot" to explaina dn broadcast the real story ...yes there are areas of africa where this is a true issue but there are others where the overpopulation of elephant promises another ecological disaster as was seen in tsavo in the 60s ... KWS is a typical Kenyan institution. However, barring catastophic events, it is likely there will be elephants wandering "free" for as long as they have a monetary or political value for the African rulers.

Will elephants still roam earth in 20 years? If you could find a way to keep the animal rights folks out of the rule making and leave the quotas to the game departments, they will be around a lot longer than 20 years down the road! .........................................Good luck with trying to get the bunny huggers out of the mix. Thier idea of wild life ends at poodle dogs in pink tutus in their natural habatat, the local mall ! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

As I recall, Kenya didn't have problems like this back when they supported the Hunting Industry.
