Ok, for some fun, if you could get a semi-matched set of two rifles for a hunt in the Save Conservancy for buff and plains game - what two calibers would you twin up?

I will start - .375 H&H and .300 H&H

What about you?

I'm a bit "iffy" on a 375 for buffalo, so I'll go 458 and 338.

If limited to bolt rifles 458 Lott and 375 H&H or 375 Ruger.

If doubles, 500 N.E. and 375 Flanged Magnum scoped.

If mix and match 500 N.E. and 375 H&H.

I have been to the SAVE on a like hunt.
I have a double 470 so I took it for the Buffalo.
I took a 416 Rem (mod 70 ) i had made for me and loaded it with 370 gr NF.
I had it as backup buffalo gun and shot all my plains game with it as well.
Worked well.
If I did not have the double. I would have taken the 416 and a 338

I will go with what I took to the Selous. Two Model 70 Winchesters, one in .416 Rem for Buffalo and another in .358 STA for plains game. North Fork 370 gr. softs and solids for the .416 at 2400 fps, and 270 grain softs for the .358 STA at 2850 fps. They served me well then and would again when I return. Good Shooting.

I had a .375 H&H Dakota 76 and a .416 Rigby Dakota 76 in the Save when I went there.

I wanted to make sure I didn’t run into big and grumpy with an inadequate rifle...

Next time, maybe a 7x57 and the .416.

I took a .300 RUM and the .416 to Ethiopia and never had to use the .416, as the buffalo didn’t cooperate...

Ross,

Having hunted on the SAVE myself and having had many clients hunt there I'd say your suggested duo would be perfect. Actually shots will not be long there so even an '06 would be more than adequate for the plains game.

35 Whelen for plains game

416 Rem or Rigby for buffalo

I used a 300 win mag in Namibia a few years ago and the mountain zebra and gemsbok didn’t seem all that impressed with a .308 size hole.

Last time I took .500 MDM and .416 B&M (225 grain tipped raptors).

This time if restricted to bolt I'd take .458 B&M and .416 B&M

If mix then .500 NE for buffalo and .458 B&M for plains game with 258 grain tipped raptors. This is how I will roll next year for my 21 day buffalo/leopard/elephant hunt that was postponed. .500 NE for buffalo and elephant and .458 B&M for bait and leopard.

The first time I hunted the Save' I took a 375 H&H and my 458 Lott. The second time I hunted the Save' I took my Lott and my 338 WinMag.
My PH liked my 338 and said he wished more hunters would bring that caliber.

My choice would be a 9.3x62 with 250 Accubonds or TSXs (mine's a CZ) and a .416 Rem Model 70. The 250s are plenty flat shooting for most plains game and a .416 just hits harder than a .375...

Ross...you're a smart / experienced guy, you know caliber really means nothing! Who's shooting, and where they shoot it matters totally - nothing more.

Any .375 / .300 combo is great for Africa...after that its all personal preference, experience and belief in yourself / your weapon!

Personally I like the .375 RUM and any other .300 caliber rifle...but its just personal preference / opinion, nothing more! I do like the .416 just as a bonus Smiler

I have been doing it for donkey's years, and have exceeded my wildest dreams in practicality.

Two 375/404.

For those special occasions where going to a country that requires a lot of long range shooting, I have a 30/404.

180 grain bullet at almost 3,500 fps is like the Starship Enterprise's Phaser canon!

Shot a blue wildebeest with it in South Africa that was about 500 yards away.

My Ph said "Jesus CHRIST! What happened to it? I want one like this gun!"

This is pretty easy for me. I've established the calibers. After a bit of experimentation, I've settled on a .416 Rem. Mag and a .30-06. It's a great battery, although on most hunts I shoot most things with the .416 because that is what is in hand. Their scopes match -- Swaro Z6 1-6 with the one on .416 being illuminated.

I'm a big M70 fan and if I had two matching rifles built, that would be the obvious choice. The .30-06 is a M70. The .416 is a Bill Wisemann build.

These will do the job, but might take a different light rifle next year for croc.

They are identical in performance.

We developed ours before Remington.

And here is a funny story.

We were hunting in Chete, Zimbabwe, when a PH and his client passed through our camp, and had lunch with us.

The client was from England, and would you believe he had a wildcat he developed on the 404 case, necked down to 375.

It looked very similar to mine, and neither of us was aware of the other.

Major differences were in the rifles.

Mine was a standard rifle with a normal stock, made for carrying all day.

His had a very heavy, thump-hole stock.

Imagine the chance of two people, from different parts of the world, meeting by chance, and both had the same idea of building a wildcat!!

I suppose I will copy the .375/.300 H&H combo, as that’s what I’ve got. The .300 needs more range time, but I’m quite comfortable with the .375.

If I could pick anything, I’d love to do a DR buff hunt to knock it off my bucket list.

My first safari to the Zambezi Valley I took two Dakota 76s: a 375 H&H and a 30-06. Worked fine.

Second safari to Nuanetsi I took my Dakota 76 375 H&H and a Beretta 686 Onyx 12 gauge (we shot sand grouse in the evenings).

2021 (if it happens) I am going back to Nuanetsi and I am planning on taking a Model 70 .416 Rem and my 30-06.

I've never hunted the Save, but I have hunted Zim twice, so I'll assume the same type of landscape, and that is close shooting for DG, and probably 200 yds. at most for PG.

My most dependable two rifle battery has been a pair of identical Dakota Safari models in 458 Lott and 375 H&H.

My other two favorite pairs have been Dakota Safari rifles in 404Jeffery/338WM, and a 404J/35Whelen (Classic model).

For something new the next time I hunt DG & PG, I think I will take my Dakotas in 416 Rigby and 338-06.

I've only hunted Africa (9) times, so I am still in the 'experimenting' stage.

I also have some beautiful rifles that Wayne at AHR has made for me that I am anxious to take.

I'm afraid I am not the intelligent one man/one rifle hunter, probably to my detriment, but I do enjoy using different rifles and calibers. For me, that is half the fun.
