Anyone catch the July Peterson's Hunting article on Boddington and Carter hunting elephant? Boddington calls Ivan the elephant whisperer. It's an interesting article that if you know anything about Ivan, generally restates the information but Craig seems to genuinely admire Ivan.

I know that Craig and Ivan are doing a lot more work together, both in African and in the US at safari shows. They are also working together on Craig's elephant DVD (and also Richard Harland!). Craig and Ivan also recently did a bull ele hunt together with Calitz.

I don't normally pick up Peterson's Hunting magazine anymore but it's a good article about one of our own. It also has an interesting article from Craig on pg. 26 called "Written Words" where Craig talks about the highly personal process of cranking out articles for publication. I agree with his comments that Gary Sitton was the best of the best.

Yes, I got my copy at the office yesterday and read the article. Was a good article, with some great pics as well.

I just finished it. A couple of observations.

1. His article on writing was well done and very "open". I have tried my hand at writing articles for magazines and it is tough. I appreciated his honesty about his thoughts on other writers, especially Hemingway and Ruark. I like some of Ruark's work, but fail to see or appreciate Hemingway. I also do not "get" what people saw in Jack O'Connor's work. He was a word-smith, much like Boddington. Boddington writes in a readable, informative style. I read him for information, not for the meaning of life. He is very "self aware" and I admire that in him, much that way I admire his admission that he shot and lost his first cape buff. I see honesty in his writing.

2. Ivan Carter is an interesting guy and I thoroughly enjoyed the article about him. I have drilled around on his website and find him different from the regular PH. I could be wrong, but I find him a big unique, maybe like a John Sharp or someone similar.

It is one of the better "Peterson's" I have read. I prefer the new Sports Afield to Peterson's but this issue is very good.

Ivan is very unique and interesting. I have talked to him several times and would love to hunt with him. If you have any interest in him, you should contact him in the off season. It really comes across when you visit with him. One of the things he does that sets him apart is teaching Army Rangers how to track overseas. salute

I just re-read the "Written Words" article twice. It's really an exceptional piece of writing and quite transparent about the writing industry in general. It lines up precisely with everything I have heard from friends in the industry.

Great article. Ivan is a gentleman. He was great with me in responding to e-mails and talking on the phone when I was booking this year's hunt. However, I think Boddington has his hunting time pretty well monopolized for this year. I would love to hunt with the guy.

Yes, that is correct. I was seriously talking to him about a hunt but after he came back from SCI, I could tell that my chances were slipping away. He is booked something like 45 days this season with Craig if I remember right for filming, etc. He also had a 30 day Big 5 hunt not long ago with a client. He's getting into the big time stuff and I have lost the window probably.
