Wild animals kill 34 August 24 2009 at 10:02AM Maputo - At least 34 people were killed by wild animals in the north-western district of Magoe in Tete province during the first half of this year, the daily Noticias reported on Monday. The newspaper cited Adelso Cassamo, director of economic activities in that district, who said during the same period animals destroyed 30 houses and 18 canoes, and also killed 12 cattle and 36 goats. "Most of the people were killed by elephants, hyenas and crocodiles in Mussenguedzi, Bawa and Daqui areas. To minimise the effects there are various actions being taken to scare off the animals including killing problematic animals," he told the paper. The Mozambican government authorised the army to shoot problem animals in 2007 and most of these animals are elephants, lions, hyenas, snakes, hippopotamuses and crocodiles. - Sapa Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

I spent all of last October at Niassa and am not at all surprised by the numbers -- living unarmed among the Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Hyenas, Wild Dogs, etc. night and day is indeed dangerous to one's health -- Let alone fishing the big rivers in those flimsy bark canoes amongst the Hippo's and Crocs. I saw and heard the native fishermen singing to the big Hippo's from their boats, but I knew that it was just a matter of time before another fisherman would stumble upon a non-music loving beast. It's little wonder that the natives become so fatalistic. When you get bored with life, start hunting dangerous game with a handgun.

This is exactly why I picked Carel Maartens PH, Southern Safaris, Mozambique for my Hippo and Croc hunt??!! After reading an article in African Hunter in 2007 specifically about Carel and the problems in his area...picture of a European client with a 15 foot croc with human remains in it...Great Hunt, the problems continue for the locals!! 470EDDY
