Could anyone please share their knowledge of K-2 in the Selous? I have a chance to go over in August and was wondering what to expect. How are the Buffalo? Are there any small game such as porcupines, jackals, hyena, aardwolf? Thanks alot, Jerry

Hunted there in 01. I'm not sure about August but in September-October there were lots of buff. Although I did not see anything over 40in a guy that posts here shot a really big one, 45ish. The area is mopani woodland and the Kilomboro and Lomboro rivers form boundries. The place is crawling with game of every type. Saw ele, lion, leopard during the day, all kinds of antalope, excellent eland, sable, some greater kudu, fantastic waterbuck, crock and hipo in the river. I'm sure you could bait for hyena-jackel. Porky, aardwolf pigs etc. you may come by by chance. To tell the truth the area if really a paradice. When I dream of Africa, that area is what I see... Have fun, I wish I was going with you. Minkman, I note you mention small game......don't forget that you can only hunt the species that occur on each type of licence.......for example a 7 day licence allows for 2 Buff and a handful of plains game species.....but none of the small game you mention. If you need to know what species occur on what licence you'll find the entire lists on the Tanzania page of my website.

Shakari, Why no small game? Are these protected? Brett, You make it sound so good! Thanks Minkman

Minkman, That's just the way it is......there are small game that can be taken but only on certain licences......for example hyena are only on the 21 day licence.......If it was on the 7 day licence a lot more would be shot as there are a lot more 7 day licences sold than 21 day licences. (IMO) Tanzania has some of the best game management policies in Africa......sure they're strict and sure they can be a nuisance.......but there is no doubt that they work. I don't know if you've taken a look at my website or not? but if you take a look at how the licences pan out I'm sure you'll see the logic in the system....... The Tz game laws also stipulate a strict minimum size restriction on certain species such as Elephant etc......again it makes the hunting harder on occasion......but it does ensure the quality of the trophies and the gene pool are maintained so that top quality hunting can continue into the future. Compare this game management policy to some other African countries where there is no size restriction and you will quickly realise how effective the TZ game laws really are.

Shakari, you are right on with your post with regards to the good management, but just wanted to correct and clarify that a hyena is on a 14-day license not 21 day just to keep the facts straight.

Jerry, Sorry, I thought you probably knew about the license rules as you mentioned a particular block. FYI, I went there for my first safari and although it was expensive it was well worth the money. I did 10 days and had 2buff, 2impala, 2heartabeast, zebra and worthog on license. Plenty for 10days. Just seeing the all the wildlife in that area is worth the price of admision. If you do go I would recommend that you book through Adam and use the PH he suggests. I would not recommend Pano if he still has this area... Best regards; Brett

Hi Brett, Who outfitted for you? I don't know much about that block and yet it sounds great from your description. "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. Mich, Pano Calivaris owned the concessions for K1 and K2 at the time. That was the year of his second heart attack so I hunted with a young guy named Jason Bergman. I see on Adam's website that he offers hunts in K1-2 now. I'm not sure if he has the concessions or is selling hunts through Pano. Adam??

Pano Calavrias? Ok that explains why you were allowed to take 2 impala and 2 hartebeest on a 10 day license! A 10 day license is based on the Gov 7 day license which only allows for 1 impala and 1 hartebeest to be hunted amongst the other quota.... "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. Michel, what are you suggesting?

Guys, It included one wildebeast as well. I saw the license it all appeared to be on the up and up. The trophys were shipped out of Tans. with no problems. No doubt however that Pano is a character...

I was in that area in 2002 early September I think. It had many buffalo and plains game of all types. Elephants were heard but didn't see them close up and lion tracks everywhere we went. Bumped 5 or so in the tall grass one day tracking buffalo. Saw a great Sable too but he wasn't on license. I'd hunt there again, especially for buffalo.

Perhaps you were unknowingly charged for a 21 day license which is the only license in TZ that allows 2 hartebeest. That will make exportation of trophies legal, etc. Does Pano still have that concession? "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. I don't know who has the concession now. Adam is selling hunts there so he should know.
