20 yards away grizzly charges. You gots one shot with your bolt action. Do you aim? Where?

Shot gun blinds him. You dive to the side.

Invite you to look up why lion hunter guides still use 45 70
Lever action. Big hole.

20 yards is relatively long way away, and one has the chance to shoot.

I have shot buffalo at less than half that distance.

Question of aiming is relative to the shooter.

But, this where instinctive shooting comes into effect.

Thanks for responding so quickly. Are there a lot of professional lion guides using 45-70 lever actions ?

I doubt it.

It would do the job though.

At 20 yards? Of course you aim.

Plenty of time.

At 20 yards you have maybe 1-2 seconds. A brown bear will cover that distance very quickly. I have faced this before and will take a buffalo any day over a brownie at that distance.

You can borrow money, but you can't borrow time. Don't wait, go now.

Would you trust a shotgun to blind the bear, then use your rifle after jumping aside ?

Faster than an African lion?

It does matter how fast.

You only get one shot.

Make it count.

You aim where? Good question! Left nostril or right nostril?

I guess you get on one knee and brain it at about 5 yards. Fast forward to the two minute mark.

I downloaded that video several years ago, it's a good one showing how it should be done and I think Pondoro Taylor mentions this as the only sure way of connecting with an incoming cat. Standing upright and trying to get the lead right on a cat coming fast is going to end in disaster. I've also got another video showing just this scenario on a big wounded male lion, everyone including the PH standing and trying to hit the beast as charged and made it in amongst the party, luckily no-one got shot let alone mauled, a real clusterf..k if ever there was one.
