We live in hope, but I suspect all this is a PR bullshit, just like all what the African and Western countries do. We will see an end to elephant poaching when real effort is put on the ground and punish those who are involved.

Chinese diplomats and general will continue to smuggle ivory in the flights and naval ships. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

Like Saeed, I think this is total BS. The Chinese are famous for saying what everyone wants to hear and doing the opposite. Just paying lip service to the current media frenzy about elephant poaching. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

It's just a scheme to jack up ivory prices. The flow will continue. The Chinese are a lot of things, but the one thing they are positively not and that's conservationists. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.

Why is it I have trouble believing the chinese would abandon a several hundred years of their traditional belief to bow to public pressure?

Never, ever underestimate the Chicoms ! They are smart and resourceful. They surely don't need ivory for their economy. Like all politicians everywhere, there are good, bad and crooked. Superficially they probably mean it. Under the covers and in the shadows the scum will continue to game the system. The weak link in ivory poaching is the inept and lackluster African Governments, gullible and naïve, bamboozled by the con artists and basically applying too little horsepower to the problem. For example - hanged by the neck until death would go a long way towards curing the poaching problem Just remember, friends, the Panda. China's precious national resource. The killing of a Panda means the death penalty in China. There are certainly dedicated conservationists in China. Perhaps extreme. Here in the USA the illegal killing of a protected or endangered species means a fine of say $15,000 and maybe suspension of hunting privileges for a few years.

I think the WWF logo should be changed. They should remove the Panda logo in protest against Chinese complicity in trafficking of tiger, elephant and rhino parts. Name and shame them. Their national pride is very important to them. If enough pressure can be exerted to remove the Panda as the logo, you will start seeing some action. The rest of the world has helped them give such high prominence to Panda conservation. They owe it to the rest of the world to stop trafficking in tiger, elephant and rhino parts. Will probably work about as well as our having drugs be illegal here in the US.

Can't change it !! The 'melamine in the milk scandal in China ' destroyed their milk industry and after at least one execution I've been told it still goes on !!

I'm waiting for the Africans to get it and kick the Chinese out.

I think you are going to be "waiting" a long, long time... Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

JBrown: Sadly, you are probably right. Money talks in Africa and the Chinese have a lot of it.

The Chinese are amazingly smart when it comes to stripping a country of their resources. They first offer to build roads and ports at ridiculously low costs, then offer to fund natural resource development and then use the same roads and ports to strip the country bare. The ivory and rhino horn are just a bonus. The yellow plague is terminal and there is no antidote for it. ___________________ Just Remember, We ALL Told You So.
