Hey everybody,
A friend of mine hunted Cameroon a few years ago looking for forest elephant & buff. Anybody here have any ideas about time of year & people on the ground in that part of the world who could help with organising vehicle hire etc?
We are looking to go back there together. His last trip wasnt really quite the right time of year and its not so easy finding people in the know.
Thanks

Are you talking about a self-guided hunt? That can be done in Cameroon, but there are many risks involved for someone unfamiliar with the country.

A friend of mine Cameron Greig is a specialist on "chasse livre" hunting in Cameroon. Huning in the rain forest requires a special kind of person especially if you are going to do it self guided. The best operation in Cameroon for elephant is run by Geoffroy DeGentille, he is associated with Moyo Oldiri a Spainish operation.

Is it true that it is difficult to find legal ivory nowadays in Cameroon? Another thing, is it true that jungle elephants have harder ivory that is more yellow than savannah eles?

Forest elephants have fairly small ivory buy Geoofroy has had little trouble finding a legal bull. However their are very few people that hunt forest elephant. Poaching has been a major problem for many areas in the rain forest of Cameroon except in Geoofroy's area. The reason being he lives 10+ months of the year in his area and has excellent anti-poaching patrols. The ivory I have seen is from a light pink to a off shade of yellow.

By the way if my memory serves me right he took a forest bull with ivory approaching 50 lbs. last year.

In Eq. Guinea they refer to the forest ele ivory as "pink ivory", better for handwork.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the input & referrals...when my buddy was there they did find tracks of a bull that was dragging its tusks on the ground...so...bigger, smaller? Pink - yellow? Jungle elephant are still elephant! Last time he was there he went alone, and Mike...you hit it on the head...it does take a special kind of person to do it...which is why I am going with him!
We are planning to do it self guided yes, but when J was there last time, a couple of years ago, he spent a week on the road and a week in the jungle. We want to try and set up so that we can be in situ chop chop and hunt for a little longer this time.
Like I said - tanks for da tips & if anything else comes to mind feel free to let me know

Andy
