Question for PH's-Laser pointer

After watching the Lapierre Ele video, I have a question. Would carrying a laser pointer be against the law? In the video, WLP, on the insurance shots, shoots into the same spot three times, apparently misunderstanding where his PH wanted him to aim. If the PH had a laser pointer, there would not have been any doubt about where he wanted him to hit. I know everyone is supposed to know these things, but it seems to me that in cases like this, that might be a good thirty dollar investment.

I think the error was due to parallax between scope and barrel instead of a misunderstanding on intended target.

Charles, at most the difference you are talking about would be 2 inches.

An elephant's heart would be about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. So if the mark was the center of the heart, 2 inches one way or the other would still be a solid hit.

I don’t have one, but I would buy Doctari’s book if I’m going on a hunt that costs that much. Then again, I’m not quite sure WLP paid full price, just as celebrities that have plenty of money that get free rides.

The book is one thing, but I would also look into the SAAM/FTW shooting school. Once again, I haven’t been there, but I would do it prior to going on an DG hunt.

I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills.

This issue came up years ago back when I used to bow hunt. Thought it was unethical then and still do. Learn where to shoot your own animals.

PH'ing should never require hand holding to the point a red laser pointer is required, ESPECIALLY on DG. It's incumbent on the client, celebrity-client or what ever kind of client to know the striking zones from all angles. If not, don't step foot in the bush.

Laser pointers...... Goodness, what next?

Get your shit together BEFORE embarking on a safari. Know your quarry and know the anatomy.

Come on Neil it would be a great tool in camp and you could point at the Whiskey of choice from behind the bar.

Andrew, now you are talking. A bar and laser what could go wrong. A shaky hand and you get to try a new drink.

I have a client who is an honest to God "Rocket Scientist" and very tech oriented. He suggested to me after a buffalo hunt that a laser pointer could be of great use. It had been hard for him and the PH to get on the same page about what buffalo to shoot and he thought a laser pointer would be the cat's ass for that. I think he was correct but I have not suggested that to any PH's I work with. Then again is it any less ethical than a telescopic sight, trail cameras, GPS, hearing aides or any of the other gizmos we take for granted in hunting today?

It has nothing to do with ethics Mark.

It boils down to the person who is hunting.

If he does know his rifle - like Wayne of the NRA - or totally clueless what do do, he has no business going hunting.

Doesn’t one take pride in learning what he should do before do* g it any more??

I agree with you on this. Although I consider hunting a leisure activity the skills required to effectively and ethically kill game should be seriously mastered. WLP did hunters a disservice by his obvious lack of preparation.

I would like to know how he thinks he will see a 1/4” red dot on a buffalo at 75-100 yards. And if he is closer he shouldn’t need it. If he is unsure of which animal-DON’T SHOOT!

We use a laser scope adjuster, and you can see it very clearly at 100 yards.

Might as well go hunt with Mark Sullivan, also known as The Mark of Death, better known as The Mark of A Fart.

He will gladly, and shamelessly, kill it for you and brag about it.

And tells you it "the best buffalo hunt I have EVER had in my professional life" clap

I would take that to be a bore laser for adjusting your scope.

They are what one uses to get the rifle on paper. Many different makes are available and you still have to go to the range to fine tune your rifle and scope.

Wheeler scope adjuster

It is a magnetic instrument that attaches to the end of the barrel, and has a laser light you shine on the target.

Had to buy another one as someone left it on a 375 H&H rifle, and another person looked through the scope, saw a very nice green dot right on the bullseye, and thought the scope had a laser dot, and fired!

Blowing the ting to pieces!

You all heard of that old saying "some mothers do have them!" clap
