I just googled it and it's 5 different lions depending of the year of the movie. You learn something new everyday

Actually, "Leo", the one that's been used for the past 55 years, isn't all that impressive mane-wise. The older ones are better.

Reno Zoo has the best lions around for mane quality.

That male there has been transferred all over the country on breeding loans.

I think you will find that all the breeding is done in a very controlled and planned manner so it doesn't end up causing problems later on with possible in breeding.

AFAIK the original one was named Master. Of course his offspring start out as cubs in the MGM cartoons !!
