WARNING FROM PHASA

Dear Member,

Please take note of the latest scam / bribery at Johannesburg International Airport.

When international hunters arrive and have their Temporary Importation Permits issued at the airport, the return date gets entered wrongly on purpose.

When the clients depart for their home destination, they get told that the firearms are illegal as the permits were issued for an earlier date and they will be arrested unless they pay $200 US.

Please advice all your international clients, who have their Temporary Importation Permits issued at the airport on arrival, to first check the dates before leaving the SA Police official. This will prevent a lot of hassles when departing and save the Outfitter the embarrassment of getting these reports after a hunt.

This does not happen all the time, but it has been reported to us by one of our Outfitters. We have reported it and hope these culprits will be identified soon.

Also double check serial numbers entered and firearms description on the SAP form. The SAP neglected to enter my hunting buddies handgun on the form. I was there; I know he showed it to them. Fortunately, all turned out OK.

I took in a Thompson/Center handgun which was listed as a "rifle" on the SAP form. That didn't turn out to cause any problem either but maybe it was a ploy to get someone a bribe.

Getting off the subject of Africa a little, "mistakes" are also commonly made by Mexican customs on various forms. It a way, I believe, for the customs officials to take care of each other since they want a bribe to take care of the problem. This must be very common in third world countries.

Steve, although I could run through the Jo'burg gauntlet own my own, I use Air 2000 every trip. Last year one of my guys had one missing serial number on his form. The guy from Hunters Support/Air 2000 made the problem go away. Returning home, my same guy had his gun permit accidently washed. It was very faded. This became a problem. Enter our Air 2000 guy. Problem went away. Meanwhile, I saw the exact thing happen from the PHASA article (thanks for posting reddy375). They nailed the guy for $500 because his permit had "expired" and he complained....to the "Complaint Department."

This has also been tried in Zim. Make sure you check your date of leaving. They will short you a couple of days then when you are trying to leave the country someone will try and tell you that you have stayed past your written date of leaving and try and collect a "fee" so you guns can leave the country. Best to add two or three days to cover yourself in case you stay an extra day or two.

Once again Steve has given some good advise to those arriving and departing JIA with guns. Air 2000 that I recommend or one of the other services is well worth the expense. I'll be going through JIA this Sept/Oct and will again use Air 2000 to handle my guns and luggage. Considering how easy Air 2000 makes things I feel it is the cheapest part of the safari.

As for tipping porters and people whose responsibility it is to get my guns on the plane it is just the prudent thing to do. It is amazing how much more you can get done by giving someone a few bucks.

Some friends just returned from RSA after an East Cape hunting trip -- they wanted to collect 200R because pistols belonging to two hunters (1 each) were stored in a single case (that would make it 100R per gun).

Looks like SAPS is up to shenanigans STILL. I know PHASA really tries to keep the hassle down, and has been an effective lobby in the past because of the impact our $'s make... but it looks like something's slipping. What's the political situation there? Are things moving in some direction that's boiling over to SAPS? or is it just corruption creep?

My old boss worked over seas for the better part of 20 years. He often told of how "gifts" were used as part of doing business. He said when he went overseas to work he didnt get much done until he became aware of the custom of tipping or gift giving. 3rd world countries do business under a different set of rules. Even my Mexican friends tell me how it is a common way, even for them as Mexicans.....not just the touristas

I don't know if they got names and #'s... I'll see if they did. I'm not even sure they had to pay the 200R -- just that there was a hassle.

They did say the same as you did about the politics. I've been reading about the back and forth between RSA's president and Zim, the pressure that Zim's policies have had on RSA. More, I have read very little about repatriation things since last year... LOOKS like things were quieter, though crime is still a problem around J'burg, I've heard. I just wondered if what I read was what people who live there are feeling...
