I know this subject has been discussed earlier, but I just have to ask. 2. of Mars I am leaving for a 8 days plains game hunt in RSA. My plan was to bring my Lott ( I know some of you think is a bit much…) I shoots like dream, and with silencer mounted ( first DGR with silencer Cool) it is very pleasant to shoot, and will not ruin my hearing Big Grin! Enough about my Lott…

A couple of weeks ago I received a Rem 700 in a wildcat chambering called 30/350. As you know this i a 350 RM necked to .30 cal. I justed needed the action for a project, so I did not plan to use it. However it handles like dream!! It has a stock that fits me perfect, M70 safety, and a tuned trigger. Now I don`t what to do?!? killpc Standing i the customs at Jo`burg not getting my rifle trough would be a nightmare! Would it be of any help that the name of the wildcat is ALMOST identical to the “parent†cartridge? I of course use 350RM shells.

Would you help convincing me to either leave the 30/350 at home, or that there is NO problem bringing it!

Your asking for trouble bringing a wildcat cartridge on a foreign hunt!

You need to think about the what ifs.

What if you land in the local airport and your 80 rounds of handloads for the 30/350 never got past Atlanta?

If you were shooting a 30-06, 308, 270, 7mm Mag, 300 mag, 375, 338, Weatherby, 7x64, 7x57, 8x57, or 9.3x62 you wouldn't have a problem.

Shooting your 30/350, which I am sure is a nice rifle and no ammo for it and you will be in deep dog shit.

As for the 458 Lott on plains game? Just another all around bad idea.

I would bring one of those rifles if you have to, but my second rifle would be something common.

Just sent an e-mail to SAPS regarding this question. I don`t know if I will get any reply, but...

As for the Lott... I will not start my long speach to justify it for plainsgame...

Who did the Can on your .458, Was it a .45 Auto Suppressor that was transfored to a .458, and what would be the point???? Lots of crap would get built up in it, without to much of a purpose????

Follow what D99 said and bring a common caliber, good luck finding anything resembling a 30-350 if your luggage gets lost/stolen. Bring a 30-06 and you can kill all the plains game in RSA with that.

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

Take your 30/350. If it goes missing every outfitter I've ever hunted with in SA has a loaner available. What's the difference if your common caliber 06 goes missing. Same result. I've had more bad luck with gun cases being delayed than luggage. Be sure to register whatever you take with US customs before you leave so return will be without problems.

There seems to be some missunderstanding. I do not consern about loosing my ammo, and not beeing able to find new in RSA. If it is lost, it is lost. However, I do consern about not getting my rifle trough the customs!

About my Lott with silencer. I am living in Norway, and we have other regulations about owning a silencer. We do not need any permit, as long as you own a rifle. The reasen why I want it on my hunting rifle, is that I want to protect my hearing. With the silencer I reduce sound enough to make it tolerable even without hearing protection. As a bonus, recoil is reduced by nearly 50%, and there is almost no muzzle flash. The silencer is "telescopic", just 2/3 of it lenght is in front of the barrel. It is made of alu and titanium.

I would think the customs people in Africa would think it is nothing more than a muzzle brake and if asked that is what I would tell them. The headstamp on the shell is a different issue. The last time I went to SA they seemed very intent on making sure you were not bringing in ammo for a caliber other than the one you are using. If your gun is marked 350 and your brass says 350 no problem. If your gun was restamped when converted to 30/350 you might run into problems.
