Rainy day here in PA, so I spent the afternoon working with the digital video that was taken of my tuskless ele hunt last month with Buzz Charlton in the Zambezi Valley. Added 6/6: Here is a link to the video clip for the 1st tuskless ele shot: Tuskless Ele1 Added: Here is a link to the video clip: Tuskless Ele2 The sequence of events was captured from the video, using Buzz's new Canon Pro-Series GL2 camcorder. If anybody is curious...I used my new Canon "consumer" Elura 600 digital camcorder to capture still frames in 1 millisecond increments off of the mini-DV tape, copied them to the SD Memory card in the camcorder, transferred the image files to my PC via the USB connection, used Photoshop Elements to reduce them in size slightly from the camcorder's 640x480 resolution, then did an FTP transfer to get them on my web space for posting. This digital stuff still amazes me. Buzz's webpage: Buzz Charlton

Cool! How many milliseconds does that entire sequence take? Nice puff of dust between the ele's eyes in the first frame that also shows the smoke of the smokeless muzzle blast. Thanks for sharing.

Bill, Neat stuff. What's the distance from you to the cow (I know it is probably closer than it looks in the pics). Regards, Terry P.S. I noticed on Buzz's website that he is offering hunts at Doma. I understand it used to be one of the best places for sable in Zimbabwe, but I thought there was some problem with it re: war vets.

Excellent sequence, Bill. Even better shooting! Looks like the .416 Rem Mag worked it's magic pretty well.

Russell - the .416 is absolutely plenty for the cows, and I'm sure will be just right for your 60lb+ bull Terry, I walked it afterwards at an honest 12-yards, but Sean was another 5-10 yards behind. This was his first ele hunt and first time with a camcorder, so I'm thrilled he got what he did. But in the future, and in particular with the Bull hunts, Buzz wants him to go from the hunter and zoom in on the ele to try and capture the impact using enough zoom so it appears as if on the same plane where the hunter is standing. I'm not familiar with the Doma setup (although I think I drove through the area on the way to Chewore). I know Buzz had been looking to work with another PH (Myles McCallum) who could help out with some PG hunting, and this may be an area he hunts. (Edited 6/6) I checked w/Buzz, he said "I will be the last person to join hands with any of the thugs taking advantage of the situation here in Zim. I have not hunted there before Bill and infact it was looked into by Miles who has hunted there under Roger Whittal safaris who is a well known and experienced operator. They have had a bit of trouble with war vets over the last couple of years through out that general area but the camps are well run and you as hunters do not get hassled at all. It is an area that one is unlikely to shoot a big ele but as we said the price reflects that." I'd check it out Terry further if interested, in terms of what game is left, quality, etc. Buzz is looking at it more for ele, as this is mostly what he thinks about! There is some great footage taken by a friend of Buzz's in the Nick Files w/camera work the way it should ideally be filmed, such as: Norbert Cow Ele RIP, according to the camcorder, from the 1st to the last frame shown it was .56 seconds, and the ele was on the ground in just 2 seconds. If it wasn't for the video I would have thought it much longer.

Way cool stuff, Bill! The most awesome photos I've seen in a while. Might look good with an article in something like African-Hunter magazine.

Great pictures and movie Bill! I have to ask you what happened after the video ended.... The PH (I think) first comented on the good shot and then he sounded a bit exited. You also pointed the rifle to the left as if there was something coming your way I suppose that there was more elephants close by! Stefan

Stefan - the matriarch cow of the herd was rushing in from my left towards me, which is what I turned to. She looked right at me and I her, but instead of coming all the way she swerved and tried to raise the tuskless cow off the ground. Seeing this, Buzz yelled "come come come" and I followed back some 15 to 20 yards. (I did not like turning my back on them one bit). The cameraman was running too, so the video is of the ground/brush, but you can hear the ele in the background trumpeting.

Thanks for the positive feedback! Spring - I have a cable-TV connection, and the provider (Comcast) as part of the package supplies "personal web space" along with POP3 email and hosting of a small website. Most DSL or CATV providers offer similar packages, either as part of their basic service or an additional program. It's just a matter of moving the images or videos to the web space, and linking to the location (url).
